Practical overview
When it fits
Use Ignite when you want a CLI-based development workflow for Gno.land smart contracts or Cosmos SDK chain construction, especially when scaffolding and local chain iteration are part of the work.
Who it is for
- Developers creating or testing Gno.land realms and packages.
- Teams building sovereign blockchains with the Cosmos SDK.
Documented uses
- Scaffold a Gno.land realm and serve it on a local development chain.
- Call realm functions, query the chain, send funds, and run Gno tests.
- Generate a typed TypeScript client or deploy a package to a Gno.land chain.
- Scaffold a Cosmos SDK blockchain project and start its development chain.
Requirements & limits
The project documents local installation on GNU/Linux and macOS through Homebrew or a manual installer, and links to a browser-based GitHub Codespaces option.
- Ignite serves two distinct workflows: Gno.land development commands and Cosmos SDK tooling under
ignite cosmos. - The local Gno.land chain pre-funds the
test1developer account and deploys the scaffolded realm at genesis. - The documented Gno.land workflow includes realm calls, read-only queries, account funding, tests, TypeScript client generation, and package deployment.
- For Cosmos SDK chains, the project provides version compatibility guidance and recommends matching the Ignite CLI version to the SDK version.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Scaffold and test a Gno.land realm locally
Create a realm project, serve it on a local development chain, and run its Gno tests.
Before you start
- Ignite CLI installed.
- A GNU/Linux or macOS environment is documented for local installation.
Steps
Run
ignite scaffold realm counter.Change into the generated
counterdirectory.Run
ignite chain serveto start the local development chain.Run
ignite chain testto execute the project's_test.gnotests.
Expected outcome
A scaffolded realm is served locally; the chain deploys it at genesis and reloads when `.gno` files change.
Guide limitations
- This recipe covers a local development chain, not deployment to a remote chain.
- The provided example uses the realm name
counter.
Scaffold and start a Cosmos SDK chain project
Generate a chain project and start its development chain with Ignite.
Before you start
- Ignite CLI installed.
- Use an Ignite CLI version corresponding to the Cosmos SDK version used by the chain.
Steps
Run
ignite scaffold chain mars.Change into the generated
marsdirectory.Run
ignite chain serve.
Expected outcome
A scaffolded Cosmos SDK blockchain project is started using Ignite's local chain workflow.
Guide limitations
- The example documents project scaffolding and starting the chain, not production deployment.
- Cosmos SDK compatibility depends on the Ignite CLI and SDK versions.
