Hivemind — learning-at-home

Hivemind is an open-source Python library for decentralized deep-learning training with PyTorch. It connects participating computers through a distributed hash table, supports decentralized parameter averaging, and provides fault-tolerant backpropagation and Decentralized Mixture-of-Experts layers for collaborative model training.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Consider Hivemind when developing a PyTorch training system that must coordinate across independent machines, tolerate slow or unresponsive peers, or experiment with decentralized parameter averaging and mixture-of-experts models.

Who it is for

  • Researchers and developers building collaborative or volunteer-computing training systems.
  • PyTorch teams exploring training across machines with slow or unreliable network peers.
  • Developers adapting existing training pipelines through the documented PyTorch Lightning integration.

Documented uses

  • Coordinate a model-training workload across computers without relying on a master node.
  • Aggregate parameter updates across workers without synchronizing across the entire network.
  • Distribute parts of neural-network layers among participants using Decentralized Mixture-of-Experts.
  • Explore a multi-peer training example or collaborative Transformer training through the project tutorials.

Requirements & limits

The project is distributed as an MIT-licensed public repository and documents installation through pip or from source.

  • The documented minimums are Python 3.8+ and PyTorch 1.9.0+.
  • Linux is the default development and test platform; macOS is partially supported, and Windows 10+ use through WSL is experimental.
  • The README describes the default Go libp2p daemon as precompiled; rebuilding it requires Go 1.20 or newer.
  • The repository lists PyTorch Lightning integration and separate quickstart and mixture-of-experts tutorials.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Hivemind from its source repository

Install the library from a local clone of its repository.

Before you start

  • Python 3.8 or newer.
  • PyTorch 1.9.0 or newer.
  • Git and a Python package installation environment.

Steps

  1. Clone https://github.com/learning-at-home/hivemind.git.

  2. Change into the hivemind directory.

  3. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install .

Expected outcome

The source checkout is installed as a Python package.

Guide limitations

  • The source instructions do not constitute a training run.
  • Rebuilding the bundled Go daemon requires Go 1.20 or newer.
