Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a Swift application needs to query or submit operations to Hedera or another Hiero-based network, or when you need a Swift SDK with examples spanning accounts, tokens, files, consensus topics, and smart contracts.
Who it is for
- Swift developers building applications that interact with Hedera or other Hiero-based networks.
- Developers adding account queries, token operations, or smart-contract interactions to a Swift application.
- Contributors working on the SDK or its protobuf generation and test setup.
Documented uses
- Query an account balance through a Hiero network client.
- Build Swift application workflows for creating or updating on-ledger assets.
- Integrate smart-contract interactions into a Swift application.
- Run unit tests without a network or configure integration tests against a supported environment.
Requirements & limits
The repository identifies the SDK as open source under the Apache License 2.0.
- The documented minimums are Swift 5.6, macOS 10.15, and iOS 13; Swift 6.0 or later is recommended.
- Swift 5 support is marked deprecated in the README.
- The quick-start example uses a testnet client and an account-balance query.
- Unit tests do not require a network; integration tests require operator credentials and environment configuration.
- Local integration testing is documented with Hiero Solo running in Kubernetes.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Add the SDK to a Swift package
Declare Hiero Swift SDK as a dependency in a Swift package.
Before you start
- A Swift package project
- Swift 5.6 or later; Swift 6.0 or later is recommended
Steps
Add the package URL https://github.com/hiero-ledger/hiero-sdk-swift.git to the dependencies in Package.swift.
Set the dependency version requirement to from: "0.36.0" as shown in the README.
Expected outcome
The package manifest declares Hiero Swift SDK as a dependency for the project.
Guide limitations
- These instructions cover dependency declaration, not building or running an application.
Query an account balance on testnet
Use the README quick-start pattern to request and print an account balance.
Before you start
- Hiero Swift SDK included in a Swift application
- A Hiero network client; the README example uses testnet
- An account ID to query
Steps
Import the Hiero module.
Create a client with Client.forTestnet().
Create an AccountBalanceQuery, set its account ID, and execute it with the client.
Print the returned balance in hbars.
Expected outcome
The example requests an account balance and prints the returned hbar value.
Guide limitations
- The README provides sample code, not a guarantee that a particular account or network request will succeed.
