Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an AI agent needs an MCP bridge to a broad collection of locally available cybersecurity tools and the work involves authorized security assessment or research.
Who it is for
- Security researchers
- Penetration testers
- Bug bounty researchers
- Developers building MCP-connected AI security workflows
Documented uses
- Connect Claude, GPT, Copilot or another MCP-compatible agent to cybersecurity utilities.
- Coordinate security-tool execution for authorized penetration testing.
- Support vulnerability discovery and bug bounty research workflows.
- Organize security research through tool selection, process management and visual findings.
Requirements & limits
The supplied material documents a public, MIT-licensed repository and local setup instructions. It does not document hosted pricing, account requirements or managed-service availability.
- It is a self-hosted Python MCP server rather than a documented hosted application.
- The repository describes more than 150 cybersecurity tools across several security domains.
- Use with a compatible AI client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, Roo Code or VS Code Copilot requires separate integration steps.
- The documented setup includes installing dependencies and may require additional security tools for the intended workflow.
- Browser-agent use has extra Chrome or Chromium and driver requirements.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the HexStrike MCP server
Prepare the repository and start the documented MCP server.
Before you start
- Python 3.8+
- A Linux, CLI, self-hosted or server environment
- The HexStrike AI repository and its requirements file
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Create and activate a Python virtual environment.
Install dependencies from requirements.txt.
Start the server with python3 hexstrike_server.py.
Expected outcome
The HexStrike MCP server is started from the local repository.
Guide limitations
- The documented setup does not establish that every security tool is installed.
- AI-client integration is described separately from this basic server setup.
- Browser-agent workflows require Chrome or Chromium and a corresponding driver.
