Gpt2Bot

Gpt2Bot is an open-source multi-turn chatbot project that generates dialogue for Telegram and local console use. It uses DialoGPT by default, supports other text generators available through Transformers, and can use DialogRPT to rank candidate replies. Its repository includes configurable CPU and GPU examples, plus an optional GIPHY-backed GIF response feature.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Gpt2Bot when you want a configurable dialogue-generation project with Telegram and console modes, and are prepared to install its Python requirements and supply the relevant service credentials.

Who it is for

  • Developers who want to configure and run a dialogue chatbot in Telegram.
  • People comparing conversational model settings through a local console.
  • Builders who want optional response ranking or GIF replies in a chat bot.

Documented uses

  • Run a multi-turn dialogue bot through Telegram.
  • Try generated replies locally before connecting Telegram.
  • Let two bot instances exchange dialogue to assess configuration changes.
  • Choose among generated replies using a documented DialogRPT ranking configuration.
  • Add GIF responses through a GIPHY app and API key.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and reports an MIT license. The documented local setup uses Python 3.6 or later for the venv option; its Conda example uses Python 3.7.6. Telegram use requires a bot token, and GIF responses require a GIPHY API key.

  • Reply style depends on adjustable generation parameters; changing temperature, top-k or top-p involves trade-offs in predictability, coherence and repetition.
  • Available configurations differ in model size, hardware expectations and response ranking; the ensemble example specifies more than 12 GB RAM.
  • The README describes responses as influenced by Reddit comment-chain training, which can make the bot sound more like a community than an individual.
  • The project documents local console testing and a Google Colab notebook as separate ways to work with the bot.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Gpt2Bot locally

Install the project and prepare a configuration file for local use.

Before you start

  • Python 3.6 or later for the documented venv option; the example Conda environment uses Python 3.7.6.
  • A clone of the Gpt2Bot repository and its requirements file.

Steps

  1. Clone the repository and change into its directory.

  2. Optionally create and activate a virtual environment using Conda or venv.

  3. Install the requirements with pip.

  4. Copy a configuration such as configs/medium-cpu.cfg and edit its parameters, including the API token where needed.

Expected outcome

A local installation with a selected chatbot configuration, ready for the next documented stage of running a console or Telegram bot.

Guide limitations

  • These steps cover installation and configuration only; they do not verify that a chosen model runs on a given machine.
  • GPU configurations have different hardware demands; the ensemble example specifies more than 12 GB RAM.
