GPT2 From Scratch

GPT2 From Scratch is an educational Python and PyTorch implementation that reproduces GPT-2, trains it from scratch on FineWeb-Edu, and generates text continuations from prompts. Its code separates model architecture, data loading, dataset preparation and training, with configurable hyperparameters and PyTorch Distributed Data Parallel support.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it as a learning or experimentation codebase when you want to examine GPT-2 implementation details and follow a dataset-preparation, training and inference workflow.

Who it is for

  • Learners studying GPT-2 and transformer implementation in PyTorch.
  • Developers experimenting with training configurations and multi-GPU training.
  • Readers who want to follow a model-training workflow through to prompt-based text generation.

Documented uses

  • Inspect GPT-2 components including embeddings, transformer blocks and the output head.
  • Prepare FineWeb-Edu for model training.
  • Adjust training and model hyperparameters through command-line configuration.
  • Train with the documented single-GPU or PyTorch DDP workflows.
  • Generate text continuations from a custom prompt after training.

Requirements & limits

The GitHub repository is public and specifies an MIT license. The README lists NumPy, PyTorch, tiktoken and Hugging Face Transformers as dependencies.

  • FineWeb-Edu is the dataset used by the training workflow; the repository includes a preparation script.
  • The README describes both single-GPU training and multi-GPU training with PyTorch DDP.
  • The project prioritizes educational clarity over speed and production deployment.
  • A README-reported training run took approximately 46 hours on two NVIDIA A100 GPUs.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Prepare the FineWeb-Edu dataset

Download and preprocess the dataset before training.

Before you start

  • Python environment with NumPy, PyTorch, tiktoken and Hugging Face Transformers installed.
  • Project dependencies can be installed from requirements.txt.

Steps

  1. Install the listed dependencies with pip install -r requirements.txt.

  2. Run python prepare_dataset.py to download and preprocess FineWeb-Edu.

Expected outcome

The dataset is prepared for the project's training workflow.

Guide limitations

  • This covers data preparation only; it does not establish that training has completed.

Train GPT-2 and generate prompt continuations

Use the documented training and inference scripts to train the model and request generated text.

Before you start

  • Dependencies listed in the README: NumPy, PyTorch, tiktoken and Hugging Face Transformers.
  • FineWeb-Edu data prepared before training.
  • A GPU for the documented single- or multi-GPU training examples.

Steps

  1. Train with python train.py --num_epochs=5, or use the documented torchrun command for PyTorch DDP with multiple GPUs.

  2. After training, run the inference script with a prompt and generation settings, such as --max_tokens=50 and --num_seq=5.

Expected outcome

The README describes generating multiple text continuations from a supplied prompt using the trained model.

Guide limitations

  • The project is not optimized for speed or production deployment.
  • The README's reported training run used two NVIDIA A100 GPUs and took approximately 46 hours; this is a report of that run, not a general runtime estimate.
