Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need a REST interface between a Python application or other HTTP client and Google Bard, and can supply the required Bard session cookie.
Who it is for
- Developers building applications that need to submit messages to Bard through an HTTP endpoint.
- Python developers who want to run the documented wrapper locally or in a Docker container.
Documented uses
- Send a message and session identifier to the `/ask` endpoint.
- Receive a Bard response as JSON for use in an application or service.
- Run the wrapper locally with Uvicorn or use the documented Docker build and container commands.
Requirements & limits
- The documented
/askrequest requires a session_id corresponding to the__Secure-1PSIDcookie from an authorized Bard session. - The README lists Python 3.9 or newer and Docker as prerequisites; its local setup uses Python, a virtual environment, pip and Uvicorn.
- An optional USER_AUTH_KEY environment variable is documented for checking the Authorization header.
- The repository is public, but no license is specified in the repository metadata.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the local FastAPI server
Install the project and start its documented local development server.
Before you start
- Python 3.9 or newer
- Docker is listed as a prerequisite in the README
- The project repository and its requirements.txt file
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Create and activate a Python virtual environment.
Install dependencies with pip install -r requirements.txt.
Start the app with uvicorn main:app --reload --port 8000.
Expected outcome
The README says the application should be available at http://localhost:8000.
Guide limitations
- These are README setup instructions, not execution or compatibility tests.
- The documented local launch command uses Uvicorn; the separate Docker deployment flow is not required for this setup.
Send a message to the /ask endpoint
Submit a message through the documented REST endpoint and receive a Bard response.
Before you start
- A running instance of the project
- Cookies from an authorized Bard session
- The session_id value corresponding to the __Secure-1PSID cookie
Steps
Prepare a POST request to the running server's /ask endpoint.
Set the Content-Type header to application/json.
Send a JSON body containing session_id and message.
Read the returned JSON response.
Expected outcome
The README describes a JSON response containing the response message from Google Bard.
Guide limitations
- The request requires a Bard session cookie obtained from an authorized session.
- The README documents an optional USER_AUTH_KEY setting for checking the Authorization header; it does not establish current Bard compatibility.
