Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an MCP-compatible assistant needs to act on a running Godot editor—for example, to inspect a scene, create a node or modify project elements through editor tools.

Who it is for

  • Godot developers who want an MCP-capable coding assistant to interact with a live project editor.
  • Teams building AI-assisted game-development workflows around Godot editor operations.

Documented uses

  • Inspect a current scene hierarchy or search project files.
  • Create and edit scene nodes, scripts and signal connections through an MCP client.
  • Configure editor elements such as UI, materials, animation, particles, cameras and environments.

Requirements & limits

The v4 setup requires Godot 4.7 or later in the 4.x line, uv, and an MCP client. The repository is MIT-licensed.

  • The integration is an editor plugin plus a Python MCP server, not a standalone game engine or general-purpose AI assistant.
  • The repository lists support for clients including Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Codex; the dock provides configuration for supported clients.
  • GDScript has integrated validation and reload features, while C# is text-only for writing and symbol outlining and requires separate .NET compilation.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Godot AI and connect an MCP client

Install and enable the Godot add-on, then configure a supported MCP client to connect to the editor.

Before you start

  • Godot 4.7 or later within the 4.x line for Godot AI v4
  • uv, which provides uvx for the Python server
  • An MCP client

Steps

  1. Choose a published version from GitHub Releases and install the add-on in the project at addons/godot_ai/, with plugin.cfg inside that directory.

  2. In Godot, enable Godot AI under Project → Project Settings → Plugins.

  3. In the Godot AI dock, choose Configure beside the client or Configure all for detected clients; restart the client if it does not detect the new configuration.

Expected outcome

The Godot plugin starts its MCP server, and the configured MCP client can connect to the live editor.

Guide limitations

  • Use the release package and its requirements rather than copying a source snapshot over an existing installation.
  • Pi Coding Agent needs an MCP extension that reads ~/.pi/agent/mcp.json; Cherry Studio is not supported in v4.
  • C# files can be written and outlined, but Godot AI does not build .NET or report C# compiler errors.
