Practical overview
When it fits
Use Go Hdwallet when a Go application needs to derive cryptocurrency wallet addresses from a mnemonic and the required coin is among those listed by the project.
Who it is for
- Go developers building wallet software or backend services that need deterministic address derivation.
- Teams integrating address generation for more than one cryptocurrency into a Go application.
Documented uses
- Create a master key from a mnemonic.
- Select a supported coin type and derive a wallet address.
- For Bitcoin, select an address index and retrieve additional documented address formats.
- Use a Go library as an address-generation component in a multi-cryptocurrency application.
Requirements & limits
The public repository is licensed under MIT and documents installation through Go's package retrieval command.
- The project is a Go library, so it belongs inside a Go application rather than serving as a standalone wallet interface.
- The README lists BTC, LTC, DOGE, DASH, ETH, ETC, BCH, QTUM, USDT, IOST and USDC; check that the required coin is included.
- The README's examples show mnemonic-based master-key creation and coin selection, with a Bitcoin address-index example.
- The README illustrates Bitcoin-specific address methods and a Bitcoin Cash address method in addition to standard address retrieval.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Derive an address from a mnemonic in Go
Use the documented library calls to create a master key and retrieve a cryptocurrency address.
Before you start
- A Go project with
github.com/foxnut/go-hdwalletavailable. - A mnemonic to pass to the library.
Steps
Import
github.com/foxnut/go-hdwalletin a Go program.Create a master key with
hdwallet.NewKey(hdwallet.Mnemonic(mnemonic))and handle its returned error.Select a coin with
master.GetWallet(hdwallet.CoinType(...)); the Bitcoin example also specifies an address index.Call
wallet.GetAddress()to obtain the address.
Expected outcome
The program obtains an address for the selected coin; the README illustrates Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Ethereum and Ethereum Classic.
Guide limitations
- The README shows example code and sample addresses, not a complete application workflow.
- Treat mnemonic handling as part of the integrating application's design; the example embeds a mnemonic directly in source code.
