Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Consider GitBitEX when you need exchange software to run and adapt under your own operations, and can provide the required Java, Maven, Docker and supporting infrastructure.

Who it is for

  • Engineering teams building or operating a self-hosted cryptocurrency exchange.
  • Developers who need an exchange matching engine and order-book service to integrate with separately implemented wallet functions.

Documented uses

  • Run exchange matching and manage currency-pair products.
  • Replay matching-engine commands to reproduce consistent results.
  • Monitor command processing, database saves and snapshot queues with Prometheus-compatible metrics.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and the project is licensed under Apache-2.0. The documented quick start runs the service locally using Docker, Maven and Java.

  • The matching engine is described as in-memory; command replay is provided to reproduce results.
  • Standby-mode distributed deployment runs only one matching engine at a time, according to the README.
  • Wallets are not included; deposit and withdrawal handling must be implemented separately and connected to the matching engine.
  • The README’s 100,000-orders-per-second figure is tied to a specified hardware configuration.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up GitBitEX locally

Build and start the documented local GitBitEX service and open its web interface.

Before you start

  • Docker
  • JDK
  • Maven
  • Add mongo1, mongo2 and mongo3 as 127.0.0.1 entries in /etc/hosts for the MongoDB replica set.

Steps

  1. Clone https://github.com/gitbitex/gitbitex-new.git and change into the gitbitex-new directory.

  2. Run docker compose up -d.

  3. Run mvn clean package -Dmaven.test.skip=true.

  4. Change into target and run java -jar gitbitex-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar.

  5. Visit http://127.0.0.1/.

Expected outcome

The README’s quick-start path starts the application locally and directs users to its web interface.

Guide limitations

  • The guide describes a local setup; it does not document production deployment steps.
  • The build command skips Maven tests.

Add a currency pair to a running local instance

Create a product, such as BTC/USDT, through the documented local admin API.

Before you start

  • A running GitBitEX instance accessible at http://127.0.0.1.

Steps

  1. Send a PUT request to http://127.0.0.1/api/admin/products.

  2. Set the Content-Type header to application/json.

  3. Provide baseCurrency and quoteCurrency values in the JSON body, as in the README’s BTC and USDT example.

Expected outcome

The documented request submits a currency pair as a product to the local instance.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe covers the documented product-creation request only.
