Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a working Freqtrade installation needs a documented strategy starting point for code inspection, customization, backtesting or dry-run evaluation.
Who it is for
- Freqtrade users looking for strategy starting points.
- Python-capable users who want to inspect or customize trading strategy code.
- Users evaluating strategies through backtesting and dry-run workflows.
Documented uses
- Find strategy files for use with a Freqtrade installation.
- Copy a strategy into Freqtrade's strategies folder.
- Run a documented backtest for a selected strategy.
- Inspect and adapt ROI, stop-loss, signals and indicator logic.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under GPL-3.0. The documentation describes the strategies as free to use, provided as-is and without warranty.
- A working Freqtrade installation is required before installing a strategy.
- The repository recommends coding and Python knowledge and reading the source code.
- Backtest results depend on pairs, timeframe, timerange and other factors.
- The documented workflow recommends backtesting and then dry-run testing before risking money.
- The repository states that its strategies are generally starting points rather than ready-to-use strategies.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install a repository strategy in Freqtrade
Place a selected strategy file in Freqtrade and prepare it for bot use.
Before you start
- A working Freqtrade installation on the appropriate version; the repository states that strategies should work with Freqtrade 2022.4 or newer.
- A selected strategy file from the repository's user_data/strategies directory.
Steps
Select the strategy you want from user_data/strategies.
Copy the strategy file.
Paste it into the Freqtrade user_data/strategies folder.
Run the bot with --strategy followed by the strategy class name, such as freqtrade trade --strategy Strategy001.
Expected outcome
The selected strategy is placed in the Freqtrade strategies folder and specified for bot execution.
Guide limitations
- The repository recommends backtesting first and then using dry-run before risking money.
- Strategies are provided as-is, and results depend on pairs, timeframe, timerange and other factors.
Run a basic backtest for a selected strategy
Test strategy001.py with Freqtrade's documented basic backtesting command.
Before you start
- A working Freqtrade installation.
- The strategy001.py file installed in the Freqtrade strategies folder.
- The strategy class name Strategy001.
Steps
Select strategy001.py.
Ensure it is available in the Freqtrade strategies folder.
Run freqtrade backtesting --strategy Strategy001.
For refreshed test data, run freqtrade download-data --days 100.
Expected outcome
Freqtrade runs a basic backtest for Strategy001, with an option to refresh 100 days of test data.
Guide limitations
- The documentation recommends static backtest data from a defined period for comparable results.
- Backtest results can vary with pairs, timeframe, timerange and other factors; no live performance is established.
