Practical overview

When it fits

Use Franklin Agent when an AI workflow must pay for models, market data or external APIs while operating within an explicit budget. Its documented trading and research functions make it relevant to crypto-oriented autonomous workflows.

Who it is for

  • Developers building wallet-funded autonomous agents.
  • Researchers automating paid data and API-based workflows.
  • Crypto users seeking USDC-funded trading assistance.
  • Builders experimenting with multi-model agent workflows.

Documented uses

  • Fund AI model and paid API calls as part of an autonomous task.
  • Purchase live market data and develop trade plans for user approval.
  • Run research workflows that require external paid services.
  • Apply budgets and guardrails to autonomous spending.
  • Use a prepaid API balance instead of a crypto wallet.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The CLI requires Node.js 20.19 or newer, with Node 22 LTS recommended. It can be installed through npm or run with npx. Funding is documented through either a Solana, Base or Arc USDC wallet or a prepaid BlockRun API key; the wallet route is described as requiring no signup or account, while the prepaid route requires a BlockRun account and top-up.

  • Choose the wallet route when USDC-based, wallet-controlled payment is appropriate.
  • Choose the prepaid route when an account-based API balance is preferable to crypto funding.
  • Confirm the local Node.js version before installation because older versions are documented to cause startup errors.
  • Consider whether the workflow needs trading, research, paid APIs or broader autonomous task execution.
  • Review the project’s Apache-2.0 license and TypeScript implementation when evaluating it as a base for further development.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install and fund Franklin Agent from the CLI

Set up the Franklin Agent command-line package and choose either wallet or prepaid API-key funding.

Before you start

  • Node.js 20.19 or newer; Node 22 LTS is recommended.
  • npm or npx.
  • For wallet funding, a supported Solana, Base or Arc setup and USDC balance.
  • For prepaid funding, a BlockRun account and API key.

Steps

  1. Install the package globally with npm, or run it directly with npx.

  2. Start Franklin Agent from the command line.

  3. For wallet funding, run the setup command for Solana, Base or Arc, then check the wallet balance.

  4. For prepaid funding, sign up at the BlockRun user site, top up the balance and provide the BlockRun API key.

Expected outcome

Franklin Agent is installed and connected to either a USDC wallet or a prepaid BlockRun balance.

Guide limitations

  • The documented setup does not by itself establish that a task has been completed successfully.
  • The wallet and prepaid routes have different account requirements.
  • Node versions older than 20.19 are documented as incompatible with the startup requirements.
