Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a Go application needs client-side access to Flow network operations, or when developing Flow integrations against the Flow Emulator.
Who it is for
- Go developers building Flow backend services, indexers, bots or developer tooling.
- Teams adding Flow network interactions to an existing Go application.
Documented uses
- Submit Flow transactions from a Go service.
- Query accounts, transaction results and blocks, or execute scripts.
- Retrieve or monitor Flow events for backend applications.
- Develop Flow-integrated code locally using the Flow Emulator.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the project as open source under the Apache-2.0 license. The README specifies Go 1.26 or later; building and testing commands using the SDK require cgo enabled for its cryptography library.
- The SDK supports gRPC and HTTP Access Node communication; its README recommends gRPC as more efficient and faster.
- It is compatible with the Flow Emulator for local development.
- The documented installation command is
go get github.com/onflow/flow-go-sdk. - With cgo disabled, BLS signature features are unavailable; BLS tool calls cause a panic.
- The README documents ECDSA key generation with P-256 and secp256k1 curves.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the Flow Go SDK
Add the Flow Go SDK dependency to a Go project.
Before you start
- Go 1.26 or later.
- Enable cgo for building and testing SDK commands because of the underlying cryptography library.
Steps
Install Go 1.26 or later.
From the Go project, run the command below.
go get github.com/onflow/flow-go-sdkBuild and test with
CGO_ENABLED=1enabled.
Expected outcome
The SDK is added to the Go project and configured for builds that use its cryptography library.
Guide limitations
- Building with cgo disabled requires the
no-cgobuild tag and disables BLS signature features; calling a BLS tool then panics.
