Firecrawl

Firecrawl is an open-source TypeScript web-data API and deployable system that searches, scrapes, crawls and extracts content from websites for AI agents and applications. It converts pages into formats such as Markdown, HTML, screenshots and structured JSON, and provides hosted, self-hosted and server deployment paths.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Firecrawl when an AI application needs programmatic access to web sources, including crawling, scraping, search or page interaction, and when the resulting content must be passed to an agent, index or language-model workflow.

Who it is for

  • Developers building AI agents that need web search and source access
  • Teams creating retrieval or language-model data pipelines
  • Developers building website crawlers, ingestion services or structured extraction tools

Documented uses

  • Search the web and retrieve content from result pages
  • Scrape URLs into Markdown, HTML, screenshots or structured JSON
  • Crawl websites and discover their URLs
  • Extract selected information for downstream agent or application processing
  • Interact with scraped pages before extracting content

Requirements & limits

The hosted quick start requires signing up at firecrawl.dev and obtaining an API key. The repository is publicly available as AGPL-3.0 open-source TypeScript software and identifies cloud, self-hosted and server deployment options.

  • Hosted API workflow versus self-hosted deployment
  • Need for Markdown, HTML, screenshots or structured JSON output
  • Whether the application requires search, crawling, URL mapping, batch scraping or page interaction
  • AGPL-3.0 licensing considerations for repository-based use
  • Need for a documented client or CLI workflow using an API key

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up a hosted Firecrawl API workflow

Obtain an API key and use the documented playground or client examples to begin sending search and scrape requests.

Before you start

  • A Firecrawl account at firecrawl.dev
  • An API key
  • Python, Node.js, cURL or the Firecrawl CLI for the corresponding example

Steps

  1. Sign up at firecrawl.dev and obtain an API key.

  2. Use the Firecrawl playground to try the service, or initialize a client with the API key.

  3. Send a search request with a query, or send a scrape request with a website URL.

  4. Process the returned page content, such as Markdown, in the downstream application.

Expected outcome

A hosted Firecrawl workflow is configured for web search or URL scraping and returns page data for application processing.

Guide limitations

  • The supplied material documents setup and request examples, but does not establish a complete downstream indexing, retrieval or agent-framework implementation.
  • The API examples require an API key.
