Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Financemcp when an MCP-compatible agent needs structured financial queries through a local or self-hosted server rather than a standalone market interface.

Who it is for

  • Developers connecting an MCP-compatible AI client to financial data tools.
  • Teams building agent workflows for market, macroeconomic, news or statistics queries.

Documented uses

  • Retrieve market information across supported financial data sources.
  • Add financial-news and national-statistics queries to an AI agent workflow.
  • Route requests to configured providers and return source information with results.

Requirements & limits

The repository says the public hosted service is temporarily stopped; local npm use and self-deployment remain supported. The README specifies Node.js 20 or later. The project is MIT-licensed. Tushare requires a token; Qveris and Twingly require API keys for those integrations, while Binance public data, public news search and the local clock are described as requiring no credentials.

  • The public hosted endpoint is temporarily unavailable, making local use or self-hosting the documented route.
  • Provider credentials determine which source-backed tools can be listed and used.
  • Binance public market data and some public-source tools do not require API credentials.
  • Twingly news results include metadata rather than full article text.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Configure an MCP client to use FinanceMCP over stdio

Provide an MCP-compatible client with FinanceMCP financial-data tools through a local stdio connection.

Before you start

  • Node.js 20 or later.
  • An MCP-compatible client.
  • Credentials for any credentialed provider you intend to use; Binance public market data and public news sources do not require credentials.

Steps

  1. Choose the data providers you want to use and obtain their required credentials, if applicable.

  2. Configure the client-side FinanceMCP connection for stdio and provide provider credentials as environment variables, using names such as TUSHARE_TOKEN, QVERIS_API_KEY, or TWINGLY_API_KEY.

  3. Start or use the local FinanceMCP instance through the client; available tools are filtered according to the credentials provided.

Expected outcome

The client can access the FinanceMCP tools available for the configured credentials and public sources.

Guide limitations

  • The official hosted service and hosted /mcp endpoint are temporarily unavailable; this guide covers local stdio use.
  • Provider coverage depends on credentials and the tools each source supports.
