Practical overview
When it fits
Use the wallet project when you need a mobile wallet for Kusama or Polkadot, or when you want to inspect its Kotlin Android implementation. Developers preparing a local build should review the repository's configuration and dependency requirements first.
Who it is for
- People seeking a mobile wallet for Kusama or Polkadot.
- Android developers exploring or adapting an open-source wallet implementation.
Documented uses
- Manage crypto accounts and assets in the Kusama and Polkadot ecosystems.
- Inspect the Android wallet code and its architecture, modules and build process.
Requirements & limits
- The repository provides the Android implementation; the project description identifies support for both Android and iOS.
- Local Android builds require JDK 21, Android SDK API 36 and build-tools 36.0.0.
- Release builds require private Firebase configuration, and MoonPay purchases require working provider keys.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the Android project for a local build
Prepare the documented local dependencies and configuration for building Fearless Wallet Android.
Before you start
- JDK 21 and Android SDK API 36 with build-tools 36.0.0.
- A local checkout of fearless-utils-Android, or its path set through FEARLESS_UTILS_PATH.
- The pinned fearless-utils-Android commit: 7500809f33243ee47ecb2ec8563fc284ac4de0d6.
- The documented provider, Firebase and X1 configuration values as needed for the intended build.
Steps
Clone fearless-utils-Android next to the wallet checkout or set FEARLESS_UTILS_PATH to its location.
Check out the pinned commit in the utility repository.
Set FEARLESS_UTILS_LIBRARY_ONLY=true and run ./scripts/ensure-fearless-utils.sh.
Provide the required configuration through environment variables or local.properties, then run ./gradlew :app:assembleDebug.
Expected outcome
The documented setup path invokes Gradle to assemble the Android debug app.
Guide limitations
- The README says MoonPay purchases will not work correctly with stub keys, although other parts of the app are unaffected.
- Release and distribution builds must replace the checked-in Firebase placeholders with private CI configuration.
- Building fearless-utils-Android from source requires NDK r28 and a Rust toolchain on PATH.
