Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you have documentation saved in a supported text or JSON structure and want to explore question-based retrieval from a terminal.
Who it is for
- Developers or learners who want to query software documentation from local text or JSON files.
- People experimenting with a command-line RAG documentation workflow.
Documented uses
- Ask questions about documentation in a question-and-answer workflow.
- Load text documentation or extract target text from a JSON structure.
- Adjust documented parsing, collection, result-count and concatenation settings.
Requirements & limits
- It is a command-line Python application, not a hosted documentation website.
- Text input uses
--file; JSON input uses--jsonand requires--json-path. - JSON paths must include a list for iteration, and only one path can be specified per run.
- The README documents adjustable parsing and collection settings, including queried-result quantity and document concatenation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Load the included text example and open asking mode
Use the included test.txt documentation file with the default settings and reach the question-asking interface.
Before you start
- A Python environment capable of running the project.
- A cloned copy of the F The Docs repository and its included test.txt file.
Steps
Clone the repository using the README’s git clone command.
Change into the repository directory.
Run the command below.
python fthedocs.py --file test.txt
Expected outcome
The tool loads test.txt with default settings and presents asking mode for questions about the included documentation.
Guide limitations
- This guide covers the README’s included text-file example only; it does not establish results for other files or environments.
Prepare a JSON documentation input
Specify a JSON file and identify the list of target text for the tool to process.
Before you start
- A JSON file containing the documentation text.
- The key path through the JSON structure to the target text, including a list for iteration.
Steps
Choose the JSON file to use.
Map the nested keys and lists leading to the target text.
Pass the file with
--jsonand provide the path with--json-path, using|between path elements and aLISTelement where needed.
Expected outcome
The tool has a specified JSON file and path to the text it should extract for documentation querying.
Guide limitations
- The
--json-pathargument is compulsory for JSON input. - A single run cannot specify multiple paths.
- The path must include a list parameter for iteration.
