Practical overview
When it fits
Use Ezlocalai when you want to host AI models on a computer and connect tools that use OpenAI-style endpoints, or when you need a documented fallback path for local resource limits.
Who it is for
- Developers who need a local endpoint for applications built around OpenAI-style APIs.
- Users who want to run multimodal models on their own computer.
- Teams configuring multiple model servers or a local-and-remote fallback arrangement.
Documented uses
- Download and configure a selected local model based on available CPU, RAM and GPU resources.
- Serve local models through an API compatible in style with OpenAI endpoints.
- Send text or image prompts directly through the CLI.
- Configure requests to fall back to another Ezlocalai server or an OpenAI-compatible API.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an MIT license. The documented quick start installs the CLI with pip and starts the service locally.
- The initial run downloads model files and may take several minutes.
- The listed prerequisites vary by platform and GPU: Python 3.10+, Docker tooling, and CUDA or ROCm where applicable.
- The service stores downloaded models and configuration under
~/.ezlocalai/. - Fallback configuration can target another Ezlocalai instance or an OpenAI-compatible API.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and start Ezlocalai
Install the CLI and start the local server using the documented quick-start commands.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or later
- Docker Desktop on Windows or Mac; Linux requires Docker and Docker Compose
- CUDA Toolkit for NVIDIA GPU use or ROCm for AMD GPU use on Linux, where applicable
Steps
Install the CLI with the command below.
pip install ezlocalaiRun
ezlocalai start.Allow several minutes for the initial model download.
Access the API at
http://localhost:8091.
Expected outcome
The local server starts with its default model configuration and exposes an API at the documented local address.
Guide limitations
- The first run downloads models and may take several minutes.
- GPU-specific prerequisites depend on the computer’s hardware and operating system.
Configure a fallback server
Set a fallback destination for requests when local resources are exhausted.
Before you start
- A running Ezlocalai instance
- A fallback destination that is another Ezlocalai instance or an OpenAI-compatible API
- An API key when the destination requires authentication
Steps
Set
FALLBACK_SERVERin the.envfile or pass it to the container.Set
FALLBACK_API_KEYwhen authentication is needed.Optionally set
FALLBACK_MODELto override the requested model for an OpenAI-compatible fallback.Check fallback status at
http://localhost:8091/v1/fallback/status.
Expected outcome
The server is configured to forward requests to the specified fallback destination when the fallback mechanism is triggered.
Guide limitations
- This setup requires a separately available fallback server or API.
- The documented configuration supports different forwarding behavior for Ezlocalai peers and other OpenAI-compatible APIs.
