Practical overview
When it fits
Use EVM Trace when a compatible Ethereum node has already produced transaction trace data and that data needs to be parsed, reconstructed or reported on in Python.
Who it is for
- Ethereum smart-contract developers
- Python developers building transaction-debugging tools
- Teams analyzing Geth-style traces in blockchain testing workflows
Documented uses
- Inspect nested EVM calls and execution frames.
- Reconstruct call trees from supported node trace responses.
- Review emitted events and their execution order.
- Generate and merge gas reports from call trees.
- Convert compressed VM traces into trace frames for analysis.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and provides installation through pip or from source. Python 3.10 or newer is required.
- A compatible node is required for RPC trace acquisition; EVM Trace itself is the analysis layer.
- Geth call-tree reconstruction needs memory enabled to recover calldata, initcode, events and return values.
- Compressed VM traces have documented limits and are not complete Geth TraceFrame substitutes.
- Trace formats can differ in event handling, especially for reverted execution.
- The project is described in its repository as beta, with possible breaking changes.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install EVM Trace from PyPI
Set up the EVM Trace package in a Python 3.10-or-newer environment.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or newer.
- Access to pip.
Steps
Run the command below.
pip install evm-traceImport the package in a Python project that handles Ethereum trace data.
Expected outcome
The latest released EVM Trace package is installed for Python-based trace analysis.
Guide limitations
- Installation alone does not provide a node or transaction trace.
- The repository describes the project as beta and warns that breaking changes may occur.
Install the current development version from source
Install EVM Trace from its public Git repository.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or newer.
- Git and a Python package installation environment.
Steps
Clone
https://github.com/ApeWorX/evm-trace.git.Change into the
evm-tracedirectory.Run the command below.
python -m pip install .
Expected outcome
The current development version from the repository is installed.
Guide limitations
- This setup recipe does not document a complete execution or deployment workflow.
- Development versions may include breaking changes.
