EVM Bench

EVM Bench is a command-line framework and suite of Ethereum Virtual Machine stress tests and benchmarks. It pairs configurable Solidity contract workloads with runners that provide consistent platforms for deploying and calling contracts, allowing benchmark workloads to be compared across EVM implementations.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use EVM Bench when you need a CLI-based structure for comparing EVM performance on Solidity contract workloads or extending a benchmark suite with new contracts and runners.

Who it is for

  • Developers comparing EVM implementation performance.
  • Engineers creating Solidity contract stress tests or benchmark runners.

Documented uses

  • Run standardized contract workloads against different EVM runners.
  • Compare results for ERC-20 operations, snailtracer and hashing workloads.
  • Add custom Solidity benchmarks and configurations.
  • Develop runners for deploying and calling smart contracts on consistent platforms.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project is published as a public repository under the GPL-3.0 license.

  • The repository separates benchmark workloads from execution runners, and the framework can pair any benchmark with any runner.
  • The included suite covers ERC-20 approval-transfer, mint and transfer, as well as snailtracer and ten-thousand-hashes.
  • The documented CLI uses Cargo, and additional dependencies may be required for benchmark builds and runner execution.
  • Published timing comparisons are tied to the listed workloads and implementations.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Run the included benchmark suite

Start the documented CLI workflow for the repository's benchmark suite.

Before you start

  • A Rust environment capable of running Cargo.
  • The cloned EVM Bench repository.
  • Potential dependencies for benchmark building and runner execution.

Steps

  1. Clone the EVM Bench repository.

  2. From the repository, run RUST_LOG=info cargo run --release --.

Expected outcome

The documented command starts the included EVM benchmark suite workflow.

Guide limitations

  • The README notes that dependencies may need to be installed for building benchmarks and executing runners.
  • The documentation does not list those dependencies in the described workflow.
