Practical overview
When it fits
Use Ethos to explore patterns across Hacker News stories and comments, particularly when you want concept-based discovery or a structured view of sentiment and argument types rather than a conventional feed.
Who it is for
- Researchers exploring recurring ideas and argument styles in Hacker News discussions.
- Readers tracking how Hacker News comments discuss particular companies, products or technologies.
- Developers who want to run a self-hosted HN analysis application and can configure its services.
Documented uses
- Find discussions related to a concept even when they do not share the same keywords.
- Review trending concepts and sentiment associated with them.
- Track sentiment toward companies, products, services and open-source projects mentioned in HN content.
- Explore comment types such as technical insights, counterarguments and personal experience.
Requirements & limits
The README documents self-hosting with Docker Compose and requires an OpenRouter API key for the described development setup.
- Its documented ingestion source is Hacker News stories and comments.
- OpenRouter supplies LLM inference and embeddings; ChromaDB handles vector similarity search.
- The documented stack also includes Next.js, Tailwind, Express, TypeScript and PostgreSQL.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Start Ethos in development with Docker Compose
Bring up the documented local development environment so Ethos can begin ingesting Hacker News stories and comments.
Before you start
- Docker Compose
- An OpenRouter API key
Steps
Clone the devrupt-io/ethos repository and change into its directory.
Copy example.env to .env and edit the file to add the OpenRouter API key.
Run docker compose --profile dev up -d.
Expected outcome
The README says the development frontend and backend start on localhost ports 23100 and 23101, and the background worker begins ingestion automatically.
Guide limitations
- This documented command starts the development profile; it is not a production deployment guide.
- The worker's analysis depends on the configured OpenRouter service.
