Practical overview
When it fits
Use Ethers Kt when a Kotlin application needs a shared or platform-targeted client library for EVM or Solana network interactions, rather than a hosted blockchain interface.
Who it is for
- Kotlin developers building applications that query EVM-compatible blockchain networks or Solana.
- Teams sharing blockchain client code across JVM, Android, iOS and macOS targets.
- Developers generating type-safe EVM contract bindings or combining RPC calls.
Documented uses
- Make asynchronous blockchain RPC calls from Kotlin code.
- Query blocks and subscribe to new-block notifications through a provider.
- Encode and decode EVM ABI data and generate typed contract bindings from JSON ABI files or Foundry projects.
- Batch JSON-RPC requests or aggregate contract calls through Multicall3.
- Use the separate Solana module for RPC, signing, transaction, token-instruction and subscription tasks.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0. The README says releases are published to Maven Central. Android support lists minSdk 24.
- Supported targets listed are JVM, Android, iOS and macOS; the README specifies JVM bytecode 11 and Android minSdk 24.
- The suspending build() and send() APIs are for common code and coroutines; blocking and CompletableFuture variants are available on JVM and Android.
- ethers-abigen and ethers-signers-gcp are JVM-only modules.
- The Solana functionality is provided by a separate ethers-solana module.
- Provider setup requires a network RPC endpoint; the quickstart example uses a WebSocket URL.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Add Ethers Kt dependencies with Gradle
Configure a Gradle project to include documented Ethers Kt artifacts.
Before you start
- A Gradle project with Kotlin support.
- Access to Maven Central.
- A chosen Ethers Kt version; the README example uses 2.0.1.
Steps
Add Maven Central to the project’s repositories.
Declare the ethers-bom platform dependency using the chosen version.
Add the required artifacts, such as ethers-abi, ethers-core, ethers-providers and ethers-signers.
For a Kotlin Multiplatform project, add these dependencies under commonMain.
Expected outcome
The project build configuration includes the selected Ethers Kt modules with versions aligned through the BOM.
Guide limitations
- This covers dependency configuration only, not building or running an application.
- The README notes that ethers-abigen and ethers-signers-gcp are JVM-only.
