Practical overview
When it fits
Use eth-connect when an application needs a typed, provider-based Ethereum JSON-RPC client and contract interaction layer.
Who it is for
- TypeScript developers building applications that need Ethereum JSON-RPC access.
- Teams creating browser or Node.js applications that query accounts and balances or call smart contracts.
Documented uses
- Connect application code to an injected or HTTP Ethereum provider.
- Request account and balance information.
- Create contract instances from ABI files and addresses, then call contract methods.
- Handle block, transaction and contract event types.
Requirements & limits
- The application must provide or connect to an Ethereum JSON-RPC provider.
- Contract interaction requires the relevant ABI and contract address.
- The README describes the project as still under development and directs users to JavaScript API documentation while TypeScript docs are pending.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a provider and request an Ethereum balance
Connect a request manager to an injected or HTTP provider and make the documented balance request.
Before you start
- A project using TypeScript or JavaScript
- eth-connect installed with npm
- An injected provider, or an HTTP provider URL
- An Ethereum address to query
Steps
Install the library with npm i eth-connect.
Create a RequestManager using the injected provider or an HTTPProvider configured with your RPC URL.
Call eth_getBalance with the address.
Expected outcome
The application issues a balance request through the configured Ethereum JSON-RPC provider.
Guide limitations
- The example requires a provider supplied by the application or its environment.
- The README notes that the library is still under development.
Create a contract instance from an ABI
Use a configured request manager, ABI and contract address to create a contract instance.
Before you start
- eth-connect installed with npm
- An injected Ethereum provider
- A contract ABI file and deployed contract address
Steps
Import RequestManager and ContractFactory from eth-connect.
Create a RequestManager with the injected provider.
Pass the request manager and ABI to ContractFactory.
Call factory.at with the contract address to obtain an instance.
Expected outcome
The application has a contract instance through which it can call contract methods, as illustrated by the README.
Guide limitations
- The example documents instance creation and a method call, but does not provide contract-specific ABI, address or transaction guidance.
- The README notes that the library is still under development.
