Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an AI agent needs to create a draw.io architecture or process diagram and you want catalogued stencils, layout guidance and structural checks in the workflow.
Who it is for
- AI-agent builders who want agents to produce draw.io diagrams.
- Cloud and platform architects creating AWS, Azure or Google Cloud diagrams.
- Teams producing Databricks or BPMN diagrams with consistent visual conventions.
Documented uses
- Find catalogued icons and stencil identifiers for diagram components.
- Guide an agent with layout principles and domain-specific references.
- Check diagram XML for structural issues before serialization.
- Render a diagram to PNG when the optional desktop-app requirement is met.
Requirements & limits
The repository identifies the project as open source under the MIT license. The README specifies Node.js 20.6 or later, or Bun 1.4 or later.
- The agent skill must be registered separately after installation for an agent to use it.
- The vision self-check requires the draw.io desktop app.
- Graphviz is an optional requirement for the documented autolayout script for large graphs.
- The toolkit exposes both a CLI workflow and a library for project scripts.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the CLI and register the agent skill
Make the drawio-ai CLI and draw.io skill available to an AI agent.
Before you start
- Node.js 20.6 or later, or Bun 1.4 or later.
- npm or Bun for global package installation.
Steps
Install the package globally with npm or Bun using the documented command.
Run
drawio-ai skill installto register the skill from the installed package.Restart the agent.
Expected outcome
The CLI is installed and the draw.io skill is registered with the agent.
Guide limitations
- Installing the package without the skill-install step does not register the skill with an agent.
- The commands shown document setup; they do not verify the agent's diagram output.
