Practical overview

When it fits

Use it during Dota 2 matches when you want contextual advice in an overlay without switching away from the game.

Who it is for

  • Dota 2 players seeking in-match tactical suggestions and answers to gameplay questions.
  • Developers or technically comfortable players able to configure a Go desktop application, Dota 2 GSI, and an AI-provider key.

Documented uses

  • View periodic advice informed by current match state.
  • Ask in-game questions about items, counters, or strategy.
  • Provide extra notes about a role or enemy lineup to inform future responses.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project documents Windows as a requirement and requires an API key from Gemini or OpenRouter. OpenRouter may offer paid models and some free options, according to the README.

  • The overlay requires Dota 2 to run in windowed or borderless-window mode, not fullscreen.
  • The documented stack includes Go 1.24 or later, BERT embeddings, and Chroma DB knowledge-base indexing.
  • The README says advice quality depends on the selected model.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Configure Dota 2 to send game state to the coach

Set up the documented GSI connection between Dota 2 and the local application.

Before you start

  • Windows, Dota 2, and the application’s documented local GSI port (default 6000).
  • Access to Dota 2’s game configuration folder.

Steps

  1. Open Dota 2’s game\dota\cfg\gamestate_integration folder; create the folder if it does not exist.

  2. Create gamestate_integration_aicoach.cfg in that folder.

  3. Add the GSI configuration shown in the project README, which sends data to http://localhost:6000 and includes provider, map, player, hero, abilities, and items.

  4. Save the file and restart Dota 2 if it is already running.

Expected outcome

Dota 2 is configured to send the listed game-state data to the application’s local GSI listener.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe covers GSI configuration only; it does not install or launch the application.
  • The README requires windowed or borderless-window mode for the overlay to work correctly.
