Practical overview
When it fits
Use DialogRPT when a dialogue workflow already has candidate responses and needs a ranking signal tied to a particular feedback or human-likeness objective.
Who it is for
- Developers building or evaluating conversational systems with candidate responses to compare.
- Researchers exploring dialogue ranking with pretrained feedback-prediction models.
Documented uses
- Score response candidates by predicted likelihood of upvotes, direct replies or longer follow-up threads.
- Compare a response’s contextual relevance or predicted human-versus-machine authorship.
- Rerank candidate replies produced by an existing dialogue-generation model.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies its license as MIT. Its README documents local Conda setup and notebook demos.
- Select the model according to the signal that matters: upvotes, direct replies, follow-up depth, relevance, or human-versus-machine authorship.
- DialogRPT ranks or scores supplied responses; a separate dialogue model is needed to generate candidates.
- The repository documents single-ranker and ensemble scoring workflows.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the repository locally
Prepare the documented local Python environment for DialogRPT.
Before you start
- Git
- Conda
Steps
Clone https://github.com/golsun/DialogRPT and change into the DialogRPT directory.
Create a Conda environment named dialogrpt with Python 3.6.
Activate the dialogrpt environment.
Install the repository requirements with pip install -r requirements.txt.
Expected outcome
The documented local environment and repository dependencies are set up.
Guide limitations
- This setup procedure does not cover running a ranker or integrating it with a dialogue generator.
Score response candidates from a tab-separated input file
Use a pretrained ranker to process contexts and candidate responses and save ranked results.
Before you start
- The DialogRPT repository and its documented local environment.
- A tab-separated input file with each row formatted as context followed by one or more responses.
- A pretrained model checkpoint, such as restore/updown.pth.
Steps
Prepare the input file in the documented context-and-responses tab-separated format.
Run the repository’s scoring command with the input file and checkpoint, following the README example: python src/score.py test --data=doc/toy.tsv -p=restore/updown.pth.
Review the ranked output file produced by the scoring command.
Expected outcome
The ranker processes the response candidates and writes ranked results to an output file.
Guide limitations
- The README example uses the repository’s toy input and checkpoint path; adapt the input and checkpoint paths to the files being used.
- This recipe scores and ranks candidates; it does not generate dialogue responses.
