Practical overview
When it fits
Use Dcrwallet when a Decred workflow needs a command-line wallet service or an RPC-accessible wallet backend. Choose SPV for peer-based access without downloading full blocks, while accounting for the functions unavailable in that mode.
Who it is for
- Decred users who want a command-line wallet daemon.
- Developers integrating Decred wallet functions into applications through RPC.
- Operators choosing between a trusted dcrd connection and peer-based SPV mode.
Documented uses
- Create and run a Decred wallet daemon.
- Provide wallet functionality to RPC clients.
- Derive Decred public and private keys using hierarchical deterministic paths.
- Choose a full-node or SPV connection mode for Decred network access.
Requirements & limits
The project is CLI-only and provides binaries for common operating systems and architectures. Its repository identifies the ISC license.
- The default network connection uses a single trusted dcrd instance; SPV is an alternative.
- SPV downloads headers and filters instead of full blocks but has documented feature limitations.
- JSON-RPC aims to ease migration from Bitcoin Core wallet applications, but complete compatibility is not guaranteed.
- The gRPC API is not stabilized and may change; it supports notifications for wallet changes.
- Source builds require Go 1.24 or 1.25 according to the installation instructions.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Create a wallet and start SPV mode
Create a Dcrwallet wallet and start the daemon using its documented SPV mode.
Before you start
- Dcrwallet installed on Windows, Linux, or macOS.
- A terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt.
Steps
Run
dcrwallet --createto create a wallet.Run
dcrwallet --spvto start the wallet in SPV mode.
Expected outcome
Dcrwallet starts in SPV mode and connects to external full-node peers, downloading blockchain headers and filters rather than full blocks.
Guide limitations
- SPV mode does not provide voting, ticket revocation before expiry, or exact live and missed ticket counts.
- The project advises against SPV mode for heavily used wallets that require most blocks.
