Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need a self-hosted market-data store to feed analysis or trading software, and can manage its database, collector configuration and exchange request rate.
Who it is for
- Developers building analysis or trading software that needs stored exchange market data.
- Traders who want to maintain exchange data locally for technical analysis or backtesting.
- Operators comfortable configuring a database and running a Go collector on a server.
Documented uses
- Collect exchange market data into an InfluxDB database.
- Provide stored market data to technical-analysis tools, trading bots and backtesting workflows.
- Store Bittrex balance information using a separate collector.
- Plot stored data or check market prices through the separately recommended Chronograf tool.
Requirements & limits
The project is a public repository identified with an MIT license. Its README documents Docker and native installation paths; the native guide targets Ubuntu 16.04 and later.
- The README names Binance, Bittrex, Cryptopia and Poloniex for market-data collection.
- Market data is recorded every 10 seconds by default; the interval can be changed in consts.go.
- Exchange request limits differ, so collection frequency must be set with those limits in mind.
- Native setup requires Go, InfluxDB and database connection configuration; Chronograf is recommended for plotting and quick price checks.
- Balance collection is a separate program and the README documents it for Bittrex only; it requires exchange API credentials.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the InfluxDB Docker setup
Prepare the repository’s Docker-based InfluxDB database to receive exchange data.
Before you start
- Docker
- Git
Steps
Clone the repository: git clone https://github.com/ivopetiz/crypto-database.git
Change into the repository directory: cd crypto-database
Run the included scripts: . docker/build and then . docker/start
Expected outcome
The README says the preconfigured InfluxDB container should be ready to receive exchange data.
Guide limitations
- These steps set up the database; the README documents market-data collection as a separate stage.
- Exchange request limits vary, and the README warns that overly frequent requests may result in an IP address being blocked.
Configure and build the market-data collector
Prepare the native market collector to populate the project database.
Before you start
- Go and InfluxDB installed and configured
- A cloned copy of the repository
- Database username, password and server details
- Permission to write the documented log file
Steps
Set DBUSER, DBPASS and SERVERDB in the environment or configure them in consts.go.
Create /log/altdb_coin.log and set suitable write permissions, or change the log path in main.go.
From the markets directory, run go get.
Build the executable with go build -o markets -ldflags="-s -w" main.go consts.go.
Expected outcome
The documented build produces a markets executable; the README describes running it as a service to keep collecting market data.
Guide limitations
- The installation guide targets Ubuntu 16.04 and later and says other distributions may need adjustments.
- The default collection interval is 10 seconds; changing it in consts.go affects data freshness and must account for each exchange’s request limits.
