Crispasr

CrispASR is a C++ command-line runtime for speech-recognition and text-to-speech models, using ggml to support multiple backends through one interface. It supports tasks including transcription, multilingual speech translation, text-to-speech and forced alignment, with a documented HTTP server and language bindings for integration.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use CrispASR when you want a shared C++ runtime and CLI for multiple supported speech-model backends, or an integration interface such as its HTTP server or language bindings.

Who it is for

  • Developers building speech features into software through a CLI, HTTP server, C ABI or language bindings.
  • People who need to transcribe audio, generate speech or perform supported speech-to-text translation with selectable model backends.

Documented uses

  • Transcribe audio with a supported speech-recognition model.
  • Generate speech from text with a supported TTS backend.
  • Request word-level timestamps or forced alignment for audio and text.
  • Translate speech into text in another language with a supported model.
  • Integrate speech processing into an application through documented interfaces.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and specifies an MIT license. The README documents CLI usage and a browser WebAssembly build; the browser build requires COOP/COEP headers.

  • A compatible model file is required for the model-driven workflows; model formats and acquisition steps vary by backend.
  • The documented capabilities differ by backend: examples include Parakeet transcription and word timestamps, Canary speech translation, and Kokoro text-to-speech.
  • The README lists platform-specific prebuilt binaries and GPU build variants; it notes that some GPU variants require matching drivers and do not fall back to CPU.
  • The browser WebAssembly option is described as client-side and requires COOP/COEP headers.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Transcribe audio with a Parakeet GGUF model

Run a transcription using the documented Parakeet model and sample audio.

Before you start

  • A CrispASR binary built for the user's platform.
  • A shell with curl available.
  • The documented Parakeet GGUF model file and an audio file at samples/jfk.wav, or a substitute audio file.

Steps

  1. Download the quantized Parakeet model using the documented curl command and model URL.

  2. Run crispasr with the model file and audio file: ./build/bin/crispasr -m parakeet.gguf -f samples/jfk.wav.

  3. For word-level timestamps, add the documented -ml 1 option.

Expected outcome

The documented workflow produces a transcription; with -ml 1 it requests word-level timestamps.

Guide limitations

  • The example assumes the CrispASR binary and sample audio are available at the shown paths.
  • The source documents an example workflow, not a guarantee of results for other audio or model files.
