Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when beginning a NEAR project and you want to choose starter frontend and contract components from the command line.
Who it is for
- Developers starting a NEAR application who want a generated project structure.
- Teams choosing between a Next.js frontend, a JavaScript or Rust contract, or a combination of these components.
Documented uses
- Generate a NEAR project through interactive CLI prompts.
- Choose a Next.js Pages Router or App Router frontend.
- Scaffold a JavaScript or Rust smart contract, with or without a frontend.
- Optionally install dependencies from the generated package.json files.
Requirements & limits
The documented setup uses Node.js and npx from a command line. The repository is public and identifies MIT licensing; its README also states MIT and Apache 2.0 license terms.
- Node.js targets version 16+ for JavaScript contracts and 18+ for frontend or gateway work.
- Frontend choices include Next.js Pages Router and App Router.
- Contract choices are JavaScript and Rust, and either component can be omitted.
- The
--installoption installs dependencies from all package.json files.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Generate a NEAR starter project
Create a project scaffold with the frontend and contract combination you need.
Before you start
- A current Node.js installation: version 16+ for JavaScript contracts and 18+ for frontend or gateway work.
- A terminal and access to npx.
Steps
Run the command below.
npx create-near-app@latestFollow the interactive prompts to choose the project configuration.
Read the README.md created in the new project and follow its next instructions.
Expected outcome
A generated NEAR project containing the selected starter components.
Guide limitations
- The generator's README directs users to the generated project's README for subsequent steps.
- Node.js version targets differ between JavaScript contracts and frontend or gateway work.
Select scaffold components with CLI arguments
Specify a project name, frontend option, and contract option without answering interactive prompts.
Before you start
- A current Node.js installation appropriate to the selected project components.
- A terminal and access to npx.
Steps
Run the command below with a value selected for each required option.
npx create-near-app --frontend next-app|next-page|none --contract js|rs|noneAdd
--installif you want the CLI to install dependencies from all package.json files.Follow the README.md in the generated project.
Expected outcome
A scaffold configured for the chosen frontend and contract options, with dependency installation included if requested.
Guide limitations
- When using CLI arguments, all arguments are required except
--install. - The documented frontend choices are next-app, next-page, or none; contract choices are js, rs, or none.
