Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a coding task is too large for one agent run and can be advanced through repeated, reviewable changes, especially when the project already uses GitHub checks and pull requests.
Who it is for
- Developers managing multi-step coding work that can be divided into successive iterations.
- Teams using GitHub pull requests and checks as part of their repository workflow.
- Repository maintainers looking to automate bounded work such as incrementally increasing test coverage.
Documented uses
- Carry progress and next steps from one coding-agent run into the next through a shared Markdown file.
- Create commits and GitHub pull requests from iterative coding work.
- Wait for GitHub checks and reviews, then merge when the required conditions are met.
- Retry after a failed iteration by closing its pull request and discarding the work.
Requirements & limits
The project is open source under the MIT license. The README documents Bash installation and a native Windows PowerShell 7 runner.
- Claude Code is the default provider; Codex CLI is also documented as an alternative.
- The Bash runner requires jq; the PowerShell runner uses native JSON parsing.
- Full pull-request automation is for GitHub repositories, while local-only operation is documented with commits disabled or branch creation disabled.
- Worktree management, self-update and automatic CI/comment retry workflows are Bash-runner only.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Continuous Claude and prepare its command-line prerequisites
Install the runner and authenticate the coding-agent and GitHub command-line tools before starting a coding loop.
Before you start
- A Bash environment, or Windows with PowerShell 7.
- Claude Code CLI or Codex CLI, authenticated with
claude authorcodex login. - GitHub CLI, authenticated with
gh auth login. - jq for the Bash runner; the PowerShell runner uses native JSON parsing.
Steps
For Bash, run the command below.
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AnandChowdhary/continuous-claude/main/install.sh | bashFor Windows PowerShell 7, run
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AnandChowdhary/continuous-claude/main/install.ps1 | iex.Authenticate the selected coding-agent CLI and GitHub CLI using their documented commands.
Install jq for Bash if it is not already available.
Expected outcome
The runner is installed, its dependencies are prepared, and the required agent and GitHub CLIs are authenticated.
Guide limitations
- The PowerShell runner omits worktree management, self-update, and automatic CI/comment retry workflows available only in the Bash runner.
- The Bash installer may guide users through adding the install directory to PATH.
Start a bounded coding loop for a GitHub repository
Run a prompted coding task for a specified number of iterations using the repository's GitHub pull-request workflow.
Before you start
- Continuous Claude installed and available as a command.
- An authenticated Claude Code CLI or Codex CLI.
- An authenticated GitHub CLI and a GitHub repository with its remote available to the runner.
- jq for Bash, but not for the PowerShell runner.
Steps
From the repository, run
continuous-claude --prompt "add unit tests until all code is covered" --max-runs 5.To select Codex instead of the default Claude provider, add
--provider codexto the command. For the documented Windows runner, use
pwsh ~/.local/bin/continuous-claude.ps1 --prompt "add unit tests until all code is covered" --max-runs 5.
Expected outcome
The runner conducts a bounded sequence of coding iterations and, in the GitHub workflow, can create pull requests, wait for checks and reviews, and merge when successful.
Guide limitations
- Full pull-request automation currently targets GitHub; self-hosted Git forges such as Gitea are not supported.
- The command examples document invocation and intended workflow, not a guarantee that a particular task or merge will succeed.
- PowerShell does not include worktrees, self-update, or automatic CI/comment retry workflows.
