Practical overview

When it fits

Use it before or during AI-assisted implementation when the coding task depends on current, library-specific documentation or examples.

Who it is for

  • Developers using AI coding assistants.
  • Teams building MCP-connected developer tools.
  • Users who need library documentation available during code generation or configuration tasks.

Documented uses

  • Retrieve documentation for a named library or API.
  • Resolve a general library name to a Context7-compatible library ID.
  • Supply documentation context to an LLM or AI code editor.
  • Request documentation for a specified library version.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The documented CLI setup requires Node.js 18 or newer. An API key is recommended for higher rate limits; the repository provides OAuth-based setup and manual MCP configuration instructions.

  • Choose CLI + Skills when an agent should use the ctx7 command workflow without MCP.
  • Choose MCP mode when the coding agent can connect to an MCP server.
  • Include a Context7 library ID when the target library is already known to skip library matching.
  • Mention a library version when version-specific documentation is needed.
  • Manual MCP configuration uses https://mcp.context7.com/mcp and an Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY header.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Context7 for a coding agent

Install Context7 and choose either CLI + Skills or MCP mode for a supported coding workflow.

Before you start

  • Node.js 18 or newer.
  • A coding agent targeted by the setup, such as Cursor, Claude, or Opencode, when using the documented target flags.

Steps

  1. Run the command below.

    Documented command
    npx ctx7 setup
  2. Authenticate through OAuth and generate an API key.

  3. Choose CLI + Skills or MCP mode.

  4. Use --cursor, --claude, or --opencode when targeting a specific agent.

Expected outcome

Context7 installs the selected skill or configures the selected MCP-based workflow.

Guide limitations

  • The repository does not document the complete runtime configuration for every client.
  • An API key is recommended for higher rate limits.
