Practical overview
When it fits
Use the repository when you want research code and documented workflows for image completion or for examining unsupervised feature learning through inpainting.
Who it is for
- Computer-vision researchers exploring unsupervised visual feature learning.
- Developers studying or reproducing image-inpainting experiments with Torch-based code.
Documented uses
- Run a semantic image-inpainting demo with pretrained center-region models.
- Train and test models for center-region or randomly placed image gaps.
- Study reconstruction and adversarial losses as a method for learning visual representations.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public. The README requires Torch for its documented demo; licensing is not specified in the available repository evidence.
- The implementation is Lua and uses Torch in the documented demo workflow.
- Training and validation images must be arranged in the folder structure described in the README.
- The Paris Street-View dataset is available by private link on request rather than through a public link.
- The linked TensorFlow implementation is described by the README as not implementing the paper's full functionality.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the documented inpainting demo
Prepare the repository and pretrained center-inpainting models for the documented demo.
Before you start
- Torch installed
- A shell environment
- The public Context Encoders repository
Steps
Clone the repository from https://github.com/pathak22/context-encoder.
Change into the repository directory.
Run the provided script models/scripts/download_inpaintCenter_models.sh to populate the models folder with pretrained models.
Use the README's demo command with an appropriate supplied image directory; set gpu=0 when running on CPU.
Expected outcome
The documented demo workflow is prepared to generate inpainting results from the supplied images and pretrained center-region models.
Guide limitations
- The README gives example commands for particular image folders and model files; it does not establish compatibility with other environments or datasets.
- This workflow covers a demo, not training a new model.
Prepare data and train an inpainting model
Arrange image datasets and use the documented commands to train a center-region or random-region model.
Before you start
- The repository and Torch environment
- Training images and validation images in separate images subfolders
- A dataset directory linked as dataset in the repository
Steps
Create mydataset/train/images and mydataset/val/images, then place the respective images in those folders.
From the repository, create the dataset symlink to the dataset directory.
Run the documented train.lua command for center-region inpainting, or train_random.lua for random-region inpainting, with DATA_ROOT=dataset/train.
Use the documented validation commands with the resulting checkpoint and DATA_ROOT=dataset/val to test the model.
Expected outcome
The README describes training and testing workflows for center-region and random-region inpainting models.
Guide limitations
- The Paris Street-View dataset is not publicly linked in the README; access is by private link on request.
- Display is optional; the README says to set display=0 in train.lua if it is not installed.
- The documented commands are repository instructions, not a guarantee of successful execution in a particular environment.
