Practical overview
When it fits
Use ConCert when a project needs a Rocq-based foundation for formal reasoning about smart contracts or property-based testing of their interactions, rather than a hosted contract deployment interface.
Who it is for
- Smart-contract developers who want to reason formally about contract execution and interactions.
- Researchers and developers building verification or property-based testing workflows in Rocq.
- Developers exploring extraction from Liquidity or CameLIGO to supported target languages.
Documented uses
- Model contract behavior and reason about interactions between contracts.
- Test properties of contract interactions using generated blockchain execution traces.
- Explore verified embeddings and extraction pipelines for smart-contract languages.
- Build the framework, its examples or its HTML documentation locally.
Requirements & limits
The project is available as a public GitHub repository under the MIT license.
- The documented development setup uses Rocq 9.0, MetaRocq and std++; tests also depend on QuickChick.
- The framework includes separate embedding, execution, extraction and examples subprojects, with individual project files and Makefiles.
- The README documents Liquidity and CameLIGO as extraction inputs and Elm and Rust as general-purpose targets.
- ConCert's claims about identifying real-world attacks describe project capability; they do not establish coverage or results for an individual contract.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build ConCert and its examples locally
Install the framework dependencies, build ConCert and build its example smart contracts.
Before you start
- opam package manager
- A Rocq 9.0 opam switch; the README gives a command to create one using OCaml 4.14.2.
- Git and the project repository.
Steps
Clone the ConCert repository and enter its directory.
Install the development dependencies with
opam install ./rocq-concert.opam --deps-only.Run
maketo build the development.Run the command below to build example smart contracts.
make examples
Expected outcome
A local build of the development and its example smart contracts.
Guide limitations
- The README identifies Rocq 9.0, MetaRocq and std++ for development; tests additionally depend on QuickChick.
- The guide covers building, not running a verification or testing workflow on a particular contract.
Build the project documentation
Generate ConCert's HTML documentation from a local project checkout.
Before you start
- opam package manager
- A Rocq 9.0 opam switch and the dependencies installed as described in the README.
- Git and the project repository.
Steps
Clone the ConCert repository and enter its directory.
Install dependencies with
opam install ./rocq-concert.opam --deps-only.Run the command below.
make html
Expected outcome
Generated HTML documentation in the local `docs` folder.
Guide limitations
- This recipe generates documentation; it does not describe how to verify a particular contract.
