Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an AI coding workflow needs explicit planning, trusted project context and evidence-backed acceptance instead of relying on a long conversational session or an agent's completion statement.
Who it is for
- Developers using Codex or Codex-compatible runtimes on Windows
- Teams handling non-trivial software projects with AI coding agents
- Engineers who need reproducible evidence around agent-produced files, commands and CI artifacts
Documented uses
- Break complex coding requests into bounded tasks and route them to specialist roles.
- Provide source-bound project context to coding-agent assignments.
- Run optional native subagents or cross-window workers for parallel engineering work.
- Check runtime results, physical artifacts, hashes, receipts and CI outputs.
- Prepare constrained repair work from recorded failure evidence.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and MIT-licensed. The documented V5 path targets Windows and is described as a Preview. Multi-agent execution and GLM search are opt-in; GLM search requires the documented API-key locations.
- The maintained implementation is the V5 Preview source under packages/factory-cli, not the repository's identified invalid historical V4 ZIP artifacts.
- Use of native multi-agent execution adds hook-review and scope-guard limitations; scope_guard is not OS-level access control or an independent worktree.
- Trusted context is distinguished from untrusted summaries and manual additions through source binding and admission evidence.
- The framework inherits the current Codex runtime by default; documented compatibility checks are specifically required for DeepSeek users in a Codex runtime.
- Repair preparation is read-only and does not change acceptance criteria or treat every non-zero exit code as a code defect.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the V5 local control plane
Install the documented V5 Preview CLI for a Windows project with optional multi-agent execution.
Before you start
- Windows
- A Codex or compatible runtime
- A project directory
- PowerShell
- The Codex Factory repository and its packages/factory-cli implementation
Steps
Change to the Codex Factory project directory.
Run the documented packages/factory-cli install.ps1 installer with the target project root.
Enable the documented MultiAgent option and set the documented thread limit if required.
Run factoryctl doctor for the project and review its readiness result.
Expected outcome
The project receives the V5 local control-plane setup and a doctor readiness result.
Guide limitations
- The repository describes V5 as Preview.
- Compatibility for DeepSeek users in a Codex runtime requires doctor and a small real-task check.
- With multi-agent mode enabled, doctor can report READY_WITH_LIMITATIONS because scope_guard is not an OS ACL or independent worktree.
- The CLI does not itself start agents or automatically retry failed tasks.
