Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to try the Coconut continuous-latent reasoning approach within a PyTorch training workflow.
Who it is for
- Researchers exploring continuous-latent reasoning methods for language models.
- Developers building PyTorch transformer training experiments.
Documented uses
- Configure a Coconut model with reasoning-step, latent-token, and transformer parameters.
- Calculate a training loss from prompt-and-answer token tensors and backpropagate it.
- Generate an answer sequence from a prompt after training.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the project as MIT-licensed. Installation is documented through pip.
- The documented interface expects prompt and answer token tensors; the README does not describe tokenization or dataset preparation.
- The example demonstrates loss calculation, backpropagation, and generation, but not a complete training pipeline.
- The README identifies recurrent-memory-transformer-pytorch as an architectural reference and suggests that its memory tokens could serve as continuous latent tokens.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Train on prompt-and-answer tensors and generate an answer
Use the documented Coconut model interface to calculate a training loss, backpropagate, and generate an answer after training.
Before you start
- Python environment with PyTorch installed.
- Install the package with
pip install coconut-pytorch. - Prompt and answer inputs represented as token tensors.
Steps
Import
torchandCoconutfromcoconut_pytorch.Construct
Coconutwith reasoning-step and latent-token settings and transformer parameters.Pass prompt and answer tensors to the model, then call
loss.backward()on the returned loss. After training, call
model.generate(prompt, max_length=...)to produce an answer sequence.
Expected outcome
A model training loss with a backpropagation step, followed after training by a generated answer tensor.
Guide limitations
- The README illustrates the interface with randomly generated tensors, not a complete dataset or training pipeline.
- Generation is shown after substantial training; no duration, quality target, or deployment procedure is specified.
