Practical overview

When it fits

Use Clawmem when an agent needs searchable, persistent context drawn from local knowledge collections across prompts or sessions, and you can manage a self-hosted setup.

Who it is for

  • Developers who want AI coding agents to retrieve persistent context from local project notes and documents.
  • Teams or individuals using Claude Code, OpenClaw, Hermes Agent or another MCP-compatible client.

Documented uses

  • Index local notes and project documents for agent retrieval.
  • Surface relevant stored context in prompts and initialize sessions with profile, handoff and decision information.
  • Share one local memory vault across supported agent integrations.
  • Capture decisions and other facts from session transcripts using a local observer model.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and MIT-licensed. Clawmem is self-hosted and offers CLI setup; its README describes local inference options and cloud embedding providers.

  • The documented implementation uses TypeScript on Bun.
  • Its integrations include Claude Code hooks, an MCP server, an OpenClaw plugin and a Hermes Agent MemoryProvider plugin.
  • The default local inference stack can fall back to in-process execution, including CPU; dedicated GPU is not required.
  • The README describes cloud embedding as an option, with the LLM and reranker remaining local in that setup.
  • Changing embedding dimensions requires re-embedding the collection.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Bootstrap a local notes vault and connect Claude Code

Create and index a notes collection, then configure Claude Code hooks and MCP integration.

Before you start

  • Bun and the Clawmem CLI, as indicated by the documented commands.
  • A local notes directory to index.

Steps

  1. Run clawmem bootstrap ~/notes --name notes to initialize the vault, index and embed the collection, and set up hooks and MCP.

  2. Alternatively, run clawmem init, clawmem collection add ~/notes --name notes, and clawmem update --embed.

  3. Run clawmem setup hooks and clawmem setup mcp to configure Claude Code integration.

  4. Run clawmem doctor or clawmem status to check the installation or index status.

Expected outcome

A local indexed notes vault configured for Claude Code hooks and MCP.

Guide limitations

  • The README describes local inference fallbacks and model choices; inference setup may depend on the chosen stack and available hardware.
  • The commands document setup and status checks, not an independently verified installation.
