Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when assembling a document-chat application and you want a staged implementation guide for storage, retrieval and chat rather than a hosted end-user service.
Who it is for
- Developers building chat interfaces over user-uploaded files or organizational documentation.
- Teams seeking a workshop-based starting point for a Supabase-backed RAG application.
Documented uses
- Upload, store and retrieve user documents.
- Build an interactive chat interface that uses documentation as context for OpenAI GPT models.
- Expose document-chat functionality through a REST API.
- Follow a staged implementation covering storage, documents, embeddings and chat.
Requirements & limits
- The README requires a Unix-based OS or WSL2, Docker and Node.js 18+.
- The workshop supports local Supabase development or a cloud Supabase project.
- The repository includes three sample Markdown files for the workshop.
- The README lists authentication providers, user/password login and row-level security as application features to integrate and configure.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the workshop's Supabase storage stage
Prepare a local or cloud Supabase project and begin the documented storage setup.
Before you start
- Unix-based operating system, or WSL2 on Windows
- Docker
- Node.js 18 or later
Steps
Clone the repository at its step-1 checkpoint using the README's command.
Install the project dependencies with npm install.
Choose a local Supabase stack started with Docker, or create and link a cloud Supabase project.
Set the Supabase URL and public anonymous key in .env.local, then follow the README's migration instructions for the files bucket and access policies.
Expected outcome
A configured Supabase project and the initial file-storage schema and policies described in the workshop.
Guide limitations
- This covers the storage stage; later workshop checkpoints address documents, embeddings and chat.
