Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want a customizable ChatGPT API interface with conversation management or optional voice interaction, and can provide your own OpenAI API key.

Who it is for

  • People who want additional controls for conversations with ChatGPT through the OpenAI API.
  • Users who want speech recognition or spoken replies in a chat interface.
  • People who want to run the application locally with Docker.

Documented uses

  • Search previous chat conversations.
  • Adjust the system prompt and response temperature.
  • Edit a message or regenerate a ChatGPT response.
  • Use speech recognition or have replies read aloud.
  • Share a chat session through a public URL.

Requirements & limits

The primary chat function requires a user-provided OpenAI API key. OpenAI API usage is pay-as-you-go and billed separately from a ChatGPT subscription. ElevenLabs speech requires a separate ElevenLabs API key; browser-native speech synthesis is also available. The project provides a hosted version and documents local Docker self-hosting.

  • Chat requires an OpenAI API key; a ChatGPT subscription does not cover the API usage described in the README.
  • ElevenLabs is optional for spoken replies because browser-native speech synthesis is also supported.
  • The README warns that server-stored API keys on a self-hosted instance may be used by anyone with access to that instance.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
