Blockchainbay

Blockchainbay is a Python torrent-distribution application that uses an EVM-compatible blockchain as its listing database. Its command-line client can sync listings into a local cache, search locally or remotely, return magnet links, and launch a BitTorrent client; it also supports uploading listings through blockchain transactions.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Blockchainbay when you want a command-line or local web interface for searching a blockchain-backed torrent catalog, or when you need its documented transaction-based listing upload workflow.

Who it is for

  • People seeking to search a blockchain-backed torrent catalog and retrieve magnet links.
  • Operators who want to submit torrent listings to a smart-contract database.

Documented uses

  • Search torrent listings in a local cache or query the remote database.
  • Retrieve a magnet link or launch a BitTorrent download from a search result.
  • Upload formatted torrent records to a configured smart-contract database.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The tool is installable with pip. Read-only searching does not require account funds; uploading and voting consume balance. The README documents a command-line interface and a web mode served locally.

  • The default configuration described in the README uses Polygon, an Ankr Web3 gateway and a deployed contract; other networks and gateways can be configured.
  • The initial blockchain sync populates a local cache and may take some time.
  • Direct download launch requires a BitTorrent client such as transmission-cli; magnet-link retrieval is a separate command.
  • Uploads require a formatted input file and funds for transaction fees, which depend on the selected network.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Blockchainbay and search its torrent catalog

Set up the documented command-line tool and search listings locally or remotely.

Before you start

  • Python package installation through pip.
  • A configured Web3 gateway and blockchain network; the README describes Polygon with Ankr as the default.
  • No funded account is required for read-only searching.

Steps

  1. Install the package with pip install blockchainbay.

  2. Run blockChainBay.py to start the command-line tool and sync listings to the local cache.

  3. Enter a search string to search the local cache, or use /remote followed by a search term for remote results.

  4. Use /link followed by a result number to display its magnet link.

Expected outcome

Search results from the catalog and a magnet link for a selected listing.

Guide limitations

  • The initial sync may take some time.
  • Downloading a torrent requires a BitTorrent client; transmission-cli is the documented option for launching downloads from the tool.
Source-based practical guide

Prepare a torrent-listing file for upload

Format listings and submit them to the smart-contract database.

Before you start

  • A configured Blockchainbay account with funds for blockchain transaction fees.
  • A text file with semicolon-separated fields in this order: infohash, name, size_bytes, created_unix, seeders, leechers, completed, scraped_date.

Steps

  1. Create a text file containing one semicolon-separated listing per line in the documented field order.

  2. Run ./blockChainBay.py --upload followed by the file name.

  3. The tool submits the listings to the smart-contract database specified in config.ini if configured correctly.

Expected outcome

Torrent listings are submitted as writes to the configured smart-contract database.

Guide limitations

  • Uploading requires a funded account to cover transaction fees.
  • Transaction costs vary by network; the README's dated Polygon example is not a current price quote.
