Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Blenderwright when an MCP-compatible assistant needs to perform Blender operations through tools, especially in workflows that benefit from guided prompts, visual feedback or mesh checks.

Who it is for

  • Blender users who want to direct modeling and scene work through an MCP-compatible AI assistant.
  • Developers building assistant-led 3D production workflows that use Blender.

Documented uses

  • Create or modify 3D models and materials through assistant tool calls.
  • Set up scenes, lighting and cameras, then animate and render them.
  • Review viewport images and mesh-quality reports as part of an iterative workflow.

Requirements & limits

The documented setup requires Blender 4.2 or later. The server runs locally on 127.0.0.1 by default and uses port 9876 unless configured otherwise.

  • Blenderwright requires both a Blender extension and a separately installed MCP server.
  • The repository lists Claude, Cursor, Codex, Ollama, llama.cpp and other MCP clients as possible clients.
  • Raw Python execution is disabled by default and requires session-level activation; its restrictions are described as an accident guard, not a security boundary.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Blenderwright for an MCP client

Install and start the Blender extension and MCP server, then proceed to connect an assistant.

Before you start

  • Blender 4.2 or later
  • An MCP-compatible AI client
  • uv or pip for installing the server

Steps

  1. Install the server with uvx blenderwright, or use pip to install the blenderwright command.

  2. Download the addon ZIP from GitHub Releases, then install it in Blender through Edit > Preferences > Get Extensions > Install from Disk and enable the extension.

  3. In Blender's 3D Viewport, open the N-panel, select the blenderwright tab, and click Start Server; the default port is 9876.

  4. Continue with the repository's client-specific configuration instructions to connect the MCP-compatible assistant.

Expected outcome

The Blender extension and MCP server are started, ready for the documented client-connection stage.

Guide limitations

  • Blender 4.0 and 4.1 are not supported.
  • The available instructions here do not include the client-specific connection configuration.
