Practical overview
When it fits
Consider Bitcoin Tribe when assessing a small-group Bitcoin wallet concept or when reviewing its mobile codebase and documented development setup. The README also provides separate mainnet and testnet environment instructions.
Who it is for
- Friends and family looking for a Bitcoin wallet project intended for shared use.
- Developers exploring a React Native wallet codebase with stated Lightning and gifting features.
Documented uses
- Use a Bitcoin wallet in a friends-and-family setting.
- Explore a wallet project that includes Lightning payments and gifting.
- Set up the documented React Native development environment and simulator workflow for iOS or Android.
Requirements & limits
- The project is published under the MIT license.
- The documented stack includes Node v10 or above, Yarn, CocoaPods, Xcode and Android Studio, with rn-nodeify as a global dependency.
- The README describes live configuration as the default when the specified root-level
.envfiles are absent, and gives a separate.env.example-based testnet setup. - Simulator constraints documented by the project include iOS notification limitations, scanner testing requiring a device, and cloud backup errors when simulator accounts are not configured.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the development environment and configure a network
Prepare the documented project dependencies and choose mainnet or testnet environment configuration.
Before you start
- Node v10 or above
- Yarn
- CocoaPods
- Xcode for iOS development and/or Android Studio for Android development
- The global rn-nodeify dependency
Steps
Clone the repository and enter the project directory, then run
yarn install. On macOS or Linux, the setup script runs after installation according to the README. On Windows, if
setup.batdoes not run automatically, edit the prompted user name and Android SDK path if needed, then runsetup.bat.For the default live configuration, ensure the project root has no
.envfile other than.env.example. For testnet, copy.env.exampleto.env.
Expected outcome
The documented dependencies are installed and the project environment is configured for either its stated default live configuration or testnet.
Guide limitations
- This guide covers setup and configuration, not a verified build or successful wallet operation.
- iOS and Android builds require their respective development environments.
Launch the project in an iOS or Android simulator
Use the README's platform-specific commands to start the project in a simulator.
Before you start
- The project dependencies and environment have been set up.
- Xcode and an iOS simulator for the iOS command, or Android Studio and an Android emulator for Android.
Steps
From the project root, run
yarn iosfor iOS.For Android, run
yarn androidoryarn androidDevelopmentDebug.Alternatively, use Xcode or Android Studio to build and run in a simulator.
Expected outcome
The documented simulator launch procedure is initiated for the selected platform.
Guide limitations
- The README says notifications do not work in the iOS simulator; scanner-related testing requires a device. Cloud backup may log errors when Apple or Google account setup is absent in the simulator.
- These instructions are project documentation, not an execution test or compatibility guarantee.
