Practical overview
When it fits
Use DB1 when you want to study a research implementation of a shared multimodal decision model or prepare its supplied simulated-task evaluation. The README does not document a ready-to-use generation or captioning workflow.
Who it is for
- Researchers studying multimodal pretrained models and decision-making
- Developers exploring offline reinforcement-learning evaluation on simulated tasks
- Teams investigating shared Transformer approaches across language, vision and control
Documented uses
- Explore a pretrained model spanning language, image captioning and decision tasks.
- Prepare the documented checkpoint-based evaluation for simulated decision environments.
- Inspect implementation choices involving Megatron-LM, Transformer-XL and DeepSpeed.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an Apache-2.0 license. The README describes a local Python environment and downloadable checkpoint and data files.
- The README documents a concrete simulated decision-task evaluation workflow, while text-generation and image-captioning scripts are listed as forthcoming.
- The setup assumes CUDA and NVIDIA drivers and includes task-specific dependencies such as Atari, MuJoCo and D4RL; DMLab requires a separate build procedure.
- The repository reports that DB1 reaches at least 50% of expert performance on 76% of 870 simulated decision tasks; this is the project’s stated result, not an independent evaluation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare DB1 for simulated-task evaluation
Set up the documented Python environment and place the model checkpoint and minimal evaluation data where the evaluation workflow can use them.
Before you start
- CUDA and NVIDIA drivers installed
- Conda, Python 3.9, and a compatible Linux environment
- The repository's requirements.txt and the linked DB1 checkpoint, external libraries archive, and minimal expert data
Steps
Create and activate a Conda environment with Python 3.9, then install PyTorch 1.12.1 with CUDA 11.3 and the repository requirements.
Install the listed system and task dependencies needed for the environments you intend to use.
Extract the external libraries and minimal expert data; place the DB1 checkpoint in a model_checkpoints directory.
Build the dataset index functions from src/data using make.
Expected outcome
The documented environment and evaluation inputs are prepared for the repository's simulated decision-task evaluation script.
Guide limitations
- The README requires additional libraries and environment-specific setup; DMLab has a separate installation procedure.
- The README's evaluation instructions additionally require setting RL_CACHE_DIR and the model checkpoint path before running the script.
- This guide covers setup only; it does not claim that the workflow has been executed or verified.
