Attention Sinks

Attention Sinks is an open-source Python library that adapts pretrained language models to use modified sliding-window attention, retaining initial attention-sink tokens and a recent-token window to support extended text generation with constant memory use and without retraining.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an inference workflow needs extended generation or repeated prompts without memory growing in proportion to the entire sequence, and the model is among the families listed in the project documentation.

Who it is for

  • Developers building long-running text-generation features around pretrained causal language models.
  • Teams prototyping extended conversational contexts or comparing sliding-window inference approaches.

Documented uses

  • Load supported pretrained models with attention-sink sliding-window behavior.
  • Generate text over extended sequences while keeping memory use constant.
  • Compare perplexity and memory behavior using the repository’s benchmark tooling.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0.

  • The library changes how a pretrained model handles attention at inference time; it does not retrain the model.
  • The documented examples include several model families, but do not establish support for every Transformers model.
  • Generation requires caching, and the attention-sink and window sizes are configurable.
  • The project reports improved fluency in its tests but says chat fluency problems were not completely avoided; its automatic fluency detector is described as naive.
  • The project’s benchmark comparison includes standard Transformers, simple windowing and attention sinks.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Attention Sinks for a pretrained model

Install the library and prepare a supported model for generation using the documented Transformers-style workflow.

Before you start

  • Python environment with attention_sinks, transformers and torch available.
  • A model and corresponding tokenizer from a model family listed by the project.

Steps

  1. Install the package with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install attention_sinks
  2. Load the model with AutoModelForCausalLM imported from attention_sinks, using the chosen pretrained model identifier.

  3. Load its tokenizer with AutoTokenizer from transformers, then prepare input IDs from prompt text.

  4. Configure generation with use_cache=True and set the documented attention-sink and window-size arguments when loading the model.

Expected outcome

A model and tokenizer are prepared for generation through the library’s Transformers-style interface.

Guide limitations

  • The guide covers setup and preparation; it does not verify execution on a particular machine or model.
  • The project lists example model families, but hardware and model-specific requirements still apply.
  • The README says use_cache=True is required for generation.
