Practical overview
When it fits
Use Ape Vyper when a development workflow already uses Ape and needs to compile Vyper contracts through VVM.
Who it is for
- Developers building smart contracts in Vyper who use Ape Framework.
- Ape project maintainers who need Vyper compiler version or EVM-rule configuration.
Documented uses
- Compile `.vy` files in an Ape project's contracts folder into Ape ContractTypes.
- Select Vyper compiler versions using pragmas, configuration, or VVM commands.
- Flatten a contract and imported interfaces into a single file for publishing or validation.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents installation through pip or from source and requires Python 3.10 or later. It is licensed under Apache-2.0.
- This is an Ape Framework plugin, not a standalone Vyper development environment.
- Vyper compiler versions can be managed through the
ape vyper vvmcommands. - Contract flattening is experimental.
- Standalone
.vyifiles create ABI-only ContractTypes that are not deployable, but can be used from Ape scripts to interact with deployed contracts.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Ape Vyper and compile project contracts
Install the plugin and compile Vyper source files in an existing Ape project.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or later
- An Ape project with Vyper contract files using the .vy extension
Steps
Install the plugin with the command below.
pip install ape-vyperPlace
.vycontract files in the Ape project's contracts folder. From the project root, run
ape compile.
Expected outcome
The project's Vyper files compile into Ape ContractTypes that can be deployed and interacted with in Ape.
Guide limitations
- Interface source files cannot be compiled directly; place them in an
interfacesdirectory under the contracts folder for imports. - The guide covers compilation, not deployment.
Flatten a Vyper contract for publishing or validation
Combine a Vyper contract and its imported interfaces into one flattened file.
Before you start
- Ape Vyper installed in an Ape development environment
- A Vyper contract file in the project
Steps
From the project context, identify the source contract path and desired output path.
Run
ape vyper flatten contracts/MyContract.vy build/MyContractFlattened.vy, adjusting the paths for the files in use.
Expected outcome
A flattened Vyper file combining the contract and imported interfaces is written to the specified output path.
Guide limitations
- The repository labels contract flattening experimental.
