Practical overview
When it fits
Use annyang when a website needs spoken commands connected to its own JavaScript behavior, and the target browser environment supports speech recognition.
Who it is for
- Web developers adding voice controls to an existing site
- Teams building voice-triggered search, navigation, or hands-free interactions
Documented uses
- Map fixed spoken phrases to site actions.
- Capture words from a phrase and pass them to a callback, such as a site search function.
- Start speech recognition after checking whether the browser supports it.
Requirements & limits
The project states that the library is free to use and modify under the MIT license.
- The site must implement the actions that command callbacks trigger.
- Speech-recognition support should be checked before starting to listen.
- The README documents npm, ES module, named-import, CommonJS, and script-tag integration patterns.
- Speech KITT is a separate project the README identifies for a graphical start/stop and status interface.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a basic voice command
Install annyang, register a phrase and callback, and start listening when speech recognition is supported.
Before you start
- A JavaScript website project
- npm for the documented package installation
- A browser environment in which speech recognition is supported
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
npm install annyangImport annyang using the documented ES module pattern.
Check
annyang.isSpeechRecognitionSupported()before setting up listening.Register a command phrase and callback with
annyang.addCommands().Call
annyang.start()after registering the command.
Expected outcome
The website listens for the registered phrase and invokes its associated callback when the phrase is recognized.
Guide limitations
- Speech recognition depends on browser support; the library example checks for it before starting.
- The callback's application behavior must be implemented by the website.
