Practical overview
When it fits
Use Alchemy when an onchain application needs hosted blockchain connectivity or APIs that aggregate asset and transaction information across networks.
Who it is for
- Developers building onchain application backends that need hosted RPC access.
- Teams creating wallet, portfolio, token, NFT or analytics features using indexed blockchain data.
Documented uses
- Connect an application backend to blockchain networks through RPC endpoints.
- Build a multi-chain wallet asset view with token balances, NFTs, metadata and prices.
- Retrieve wallet transfer history across multiple networks.
- Inspect transaction execution and activity through trace methods.
Requirements & limits
Pricing includes a free tier and paid usage-based and enterprise plans. The Trace API requires a pay-as-you-go or enterprise plan.
- Portfolio APIs can retrieve data across multiple networks in one API request.
- Portfolio token and NFT endpoints may return successful network data together with partial-error details for failed networks.
- Transfers By Wallet is marked Beta and has distinct partial-error and retry behavior.
- Trace API network support varies by trace type; transaction traces and state differences list Ethereum Mainnet and Sepolia, while VM execution traces list no network support in the documentation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build a multi-chain token portfolio view with Portfolio APIs
Retrieve wallet token balances, metadata, and prices for a multi-chain asset view.
Before you start
- An Alchemy account and API access; the sources do not specify a particular plan for Portfolio APIs.
- A wallet address to query.
Steps
Choose the Tokens By Wallet or Token Balances By Wallet API for the asset data you need.
Call the API to retrieve balances, metadata, and prices.
If the response includes a top-level error with partialErrors, keep the successful data and retry only the listed networks using a new request with a fixed attempt limit.
Return successful results to your client; do not treat the human-readable error message as a programmatic decision field.
Expected outcome
A wallet token view populated with available multi-chain balances and related data, while retaining successful results when some networks fail.
Guide limitations
- Some networks can fail while others return results; the response can still have HTTP 200 and include a top-level error.
- A failed network is not retried by pageKey and is omitted from the next page; retry listed networks separately.
- The documentation does not specify API request parameters or authentication setup.
