Practical overview
When it fits
Use Agent Brain when an agent needs searchable project context—for example, to investigate an authentication implementation across documentation and source code, find exact function names, or trace dependencies.
Who it is for
- Developers who want agents to retrieve answers from project documentation and source code.
- Teams using Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode or other documented plugin hosts.
- Builders connecting an MCP-compatible agent client to an indexed knowledge base.
Documented uses
- Index project documentation and code for later retrieval.
- Search conceptual topics, exact terms, or code relationships using different retrieval modes.
- Give an agent a project-specific retrieval layer through a plugin or MCP connection.
- Explore a codebase with multi-step searches and synthesized research answers.
Requirements & limits
The project is an open-source repository under the MIT license. The documented setup runs the server as part of a project rather than using a hosted search service.
- The documented development prerequisites are Python 3.10 or later, Poetry and Task; the CLI packages are installed with pip.
- The Claude Code setup wizard can install packages, configure API keys, initialize the project, start the server and index documentation.
- Embedding providers listed include OpenAI, Ollama and Cohere; the documentation identifies Ollama models as local options.
- The CLI documentation describes API-key configuration during initialization and an API-key requirement for data endpoints.
- Other plugin hosts use the CLI-based installation path, with
--with-mcpregistering the MCP server in the host configuration.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Agent Brain through the Claude Code plugin
Install the plugin, initialize a project, start the server and index its documentation using the documented setup wizard.
Before you start
- Claude Code
- An API key configured through the setup wizard
Steps
Add the Agent Brain marketplace with
claude plugins marketplace add SpillwaveSolutions/agent-brain.Install it with
claude plugins install agent-brain@agent-brain-marketplace.In Claude Code, run
/agent-brain-setupto install the Python packages, configure API keys, initialize the project, start the server and index documentation.Search the indexed material with a command such as
/agent-brain-search "how does authentication work".
Expected outcome
A project with indexed documentation that can be searched through the Claude Code plugin.
Guide limitations
- The wizard's documented setup covers indexing documentation; code indexing is described separately in the CLI usage.
- The repository names Codex, Cursor, Grok Build and OpenCode as other plugin hosts, but this recipe covers Claude Code.
Index and query project material with the CLI
Initialize Agent Brain, start its server, index a documentation directory and query the indexed content.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or later
- The
agent-brain-ragandagent-brain-cliPython packages
Steps
Install the packages with the command below.
pip install agent-brain-rag agent-brain-cliInitialize the project with
agent-brain init.Start the server with
agent-brain start --daemon.Index a directory with
agent-brain index /path/to/docs --include-code.Query it with
agent-brain query "authentication" --mode hybrid.
Expected outcome
A running local service with indexed material available for hybrid CLI queries.
Guide limitations
- The README says API keys are configured during initialization and describes an API-key requirement for data endpoints; review the current authentication guidance before changing the default configuration.
