Practical overview
When it fits
Use it as a notebook-based learning resource when studying RAG concepts or exploring methods for improving retrieval from varied documents.
Who it is for
- Learners studying RAG implementation and retrieval methods
- Practitioners exploring approaches to enterprise-document retrieval problems
Documented uses
- Work through a basic RAG implementation in a notebook.
- Study embedding models, semantic chunking, contextual retrieval, hybrid search, reranking and multimodal retrieval.
- Compare retrieval challenges in long, complex or jargon-heavy documents with approaches described in the course materials.
Requirements & limits
The public GitHub repository is identified as MIT licensed. Setup instructions cover local Jupyter, Google Colab and SageMaker Studio Lab.
- The repository provides learning materials and notebook exercises rather than a hosted RAG application.
- Local use requires setting up a Python environment and installing the project dependencies.
- The README points to an accompanying advanced RAG course on edX.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare the first notebook in Google Colab
Set up the repository and dependencies for the introductory Simple RAG notebook in Colab.
Before you start
- Access to Google Colab
- The Advanced Rag repository and its requirements.txt file
Steps
Open the repository’s first hands-on lab in Google Colab.
In a notebook cell, clone the repository with !git clone https://github.com/guyernest/advanced-rag.git.
Change into the project directory with advanced-rag.
Install dependencies with !pip install -q -r requirements.txt; restart the Colab runtime if needed, then change back to the course folder.
Expected outcome
The repository and its dependencies are prepared in the Colab notebook environment for the first lab.
Guide limitations
- The README notes that a runtime restart may be needed after dependency installation.
- These steps cover setup; they do not document the notebook’s resulting outputs.
Prepare the first notebook in SageMaker Studio Lab
Set up the repository and dependencies for the introductory Simple RAG notebook in SageMaker Studio Lab.
Before you start
- Access to SageMaker Studio Lab
Steps
Open the repository’s first hands-on lab in SageMaker Studio Lab.
Clone the GitHub repository when prompted by the service.
In a notebook cell, change into the project directory with advanced-rag.
Install dependencies with !pip install -q -r requirements.txt.
Expected outcome
The repository and its dependencies are prepared for the first lab in SageMaker Studio Lab.
Guide limitations
- These steps cover setup; they do not document the notebook’s resulting outputs.
