Practical overview
When it fits
Use Uncommonroute when you want a local routing layer to choose among configured models for coding-assistant steps or OpenAI SDK requests, and want visibility into those decisions.
Who it is for
- Developers using Claude Code, Cursor or Codex who want per-request model routing.
- Teams or developers building applications with the OpenAI SDK who want requests to pass through a local routing proxy.
- Users who want to inspect model-selection decisions and adjust routing policy.
Documented uses
- Route simple, medium and complex coding requests to different configured model tiers.
- Use an OpenAI-compatible local proxy as an intermediary for SDK requests.
- Review the selected model, complexity, latency and cost for routed requests.
- Tune routing choices and provider configuration through the dashboard.
Requirements & limits
The project is available as a public MIT-licensed repository. The documented setup uses Python 3.11 or later and supports installation through pipx or an existing virtual environment.
- The router runs locally and sends prompts to the upstream provider configured by the user.
- The README names Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and the OpenAI SDK; it also documents an Anthropic-compatible proxy for Claude Code.
- The README offers automatic, cost-first and quality-first routing modes.
- On macOS, libomp is required by the trained classifier runtime.
- The README's benchmark reports results for one held-out 100-case SWE-bench Verified split; it should not be treated as a performance guarantee for other workloads.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and initialize Uncommonroute
Install the CLI and use its documented initialization flow to configure a connection and supported client.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or later
- pipx, or an existing Python virtual environment
- For the trained classifier runtime on macOS, libomp
Steps
Install the package with pipx, or install it with pip inside an existing virtual environment.
Run uncommon-route init.
Follow the initialization flow to set up a connection and configure Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or the OpenAI SDK.
Run uncommon-route doctor for a health check.
Expected outcome
The CLI is installed, the initialization flow has configured a connection and selected client, and a health-check command is available.
Guide limitations
- The README describes the setup flow but does not provide a single provider-independent configuration path.
- The trained classifier runtime requires libomp on macOS.
Connect an OpenAI SDK application to the local proxy
Configure an OpenAI SDK client to send requests through Uncommonroute's documented local OpenAI-compatible interface.
Before you start
- An installed and initialized Uncommonroute CLI
- An OpenAI SDK application
- A configured upstream provider connection
Steps
Start the local proxy with uncommon-route serve.
Set the SDK client's base URL to http://localhost:8403/v1.
Use uncommon-route/auto as the model ID in the SDK request.
Expected outcome
The SDK request is directed to Uncommonroute's local proxy using its documented automatic-routing model ID.
Guide limitations
- The README identifies the proxy and client settings but does not specify provider credentials or application-specific configuration beyond its example.
